.17 hmr ammo

CCI makes all the 17 HMR ammo for the different brands, though bullets can vary.

My preference are the cartridges that have the 17gr plastic tip (it's a Hornady bullet)... so it's Hornady or CCI brand cuz that's what my dealer carries.

I have been very happy with the Hornady V-max on PD's.
The CCI GamePoints don't expand as well on PD's.
If you are going after fox, I'd use the GamePoints.

I have a savage HMR and it will only shoot Federal or hornaday ammo. You will just have to try it.
When I shoot CCI it looks like a shotgun blast all over the target.

I would try the hornadays first.

Really depends on what you are going to be shooting.

Cottontails, I will use the Hornady V-max. If I am going after jackrabbits, the v-maxes just dont seem to do it. Ya they do die, but not till the run another 50 yards or so. I tried the Game Points and had a lot better results, seems to anchor them a lot quicker.

My favorite .17HMR ammo are the Winchester .17gr V-Maxes.I have shot thousands of prairie dogs with about every type of ammo thats available for the .17HMR and have had the best results with these. The Federal V-Maxes are good bullets also.I dont know why but the Winchesters seem to be the most destructive of all.
The CCI Hollowpoints are good bullets also.My brother took a badger from 150 yards using the CCI Hollowpoints.Whatever you do stay away from the CCI FMJ's,they arent good for anything. They zip right through critters and it doesnt do any damage at all.In fact right after I got them I headed out to a friends house to do some prairie dog shootin. While he was getting his ammo loaded up I sat down in his back yard and decided to shoot some sparrows. The first shot I had on a sparrow was from 35 yards so I put it in the crosshairs and squeezed the trigger.I saw feathers fly off but so did the sparrow. It flew up into a dead tree for about 30 seconds and then fell out of the tree stone dead.A few minutes later I spotted another one settin on the fence posts so I shot it and it flew further down the fence and sat down on another fence posts like nothing had happened so I shot it again and this time it was a head shot so it didnt fly off again.I honestly cant say I've ever hit a critter that required a second shot with the V-Maxes.But whatever your gun shoots the best are the ones you should stick with.My guns shoot the V-Maxes alot better than the Hollowpoints so I use V-Maxes most of the time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

im going with shark on this i use to run the vmaxs for g hogs i had alot of them get back inthere hole i felt at that time i was better off with my 597 mag until i started shooting the cci hollowpoints they worked alot better for me, i had a buddy give me a box of gamepoints and they are planting g hogs drt they hold together longer for bigger animals i would love to come out west and shoot some pdogs with the vmaxs that would be wicked i bet they would destroy a pdog just my 2 cents Ron

I have shot both fox and grouse with the fmj. Thinking it would reduce the damage on a grouse. BIG mistake! I must have hit a bone or something because it caused more damage than the 17gr Vmax! I shot 2 fox, both with the FMJ and both were dead right there. Only about a quarter sized exit. Both the fox were within 50 yards however. I have not seen any of the gamepoints yet, I will have to try those out. I have a ruger 77/17 and it shoots both the fmj and the vmax equally well.

I'd try each type for accuracy. I've found that the 20 grain hps are nearly as violent as the v-max at close range, but at long range (175+ or so) the 20 grain hp doesn't expand as well as the v-max.
