this is with the horniday

My .17 will not shoot CCI shells either....looks like a shotgun blast. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif
My .17 shoots hornadys real well.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif..I can cover 5 shots with a quater sometimes a nickel at 100yds.....so I am happy with that....depends on how much time I take.

This is the best my .17hummer would shoot, normally it was in a quarter. 100 yards, wooden bench, sand bags front & rear, scope on 20 power. Hornady V-Max. Also, not in this case but many times there would be one flyer in a 5 group. Sold the rifle for lack of killing power on woodchucks.

I was recently going to purchsae a 17HMR or .22mag. I heard you mention a lack of killing power on woodchucks.I've heard several individuals complaining about "lack of killing power"with the 17HMR but others rave about the caliber. That's why I was leaning towards the 22mag.I think I would rather a slower but heavier/better penetrating bullet over the blistering speed of the 17HMR.Still unsure of my choice. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Don't forget to consider accuracy Beagler! Most .17 HMR rifles will hold 1" groups at 100 yards right out of the box. I haven't heard of or seen many 22 mags do that even after alot of mods. I've personally killed a number of coyotes (6) with my HMR with no problems all were either bang flops or did a couple of spins and went down. One in particular was shot quartering sharply toward me at 66 yards with a Hornady 20 gr. XTP. The bullet hit in front of the shoulder and was found under the offside hide behind the last rib. He didn't even wiggle. If that's not killing power????

The rifles seem to be fairly accurate, which is good. I am getting minute of coke can at 50yds with a 17 HMR taurus tracker with a 2x scope.

The gun itself is very heavy for the round. I am hoping to progress to minute of coke can at 100 yds with this setup.

Talk about the killing power with the HMR, I've shot 21 PD's so far with it's little brother, The Mach 2. I can't believe the bang-flop the Mach 2 has...I am really surprised by baby brothers PD killing power out to 100 yards.

Hey beagler,
That was just my .2 cents. When I bought the hummer I thought it may fill a void. I already had a .22 rim semi auto. I really enjoyed shooting it. I was quite enthusiastic about it at first because it was something new I suppose. I tried to stay optimistic in regards to sniping Woodchucks with it but that faded.
You know here was this cool rim fire with some quality ammo that shot pretty accurate out to 150 yards. Yet, on woodchuck size game (10 pounds say) had mixed results with in it's varmint accuracy range (say plus or minus 1 1/2".......or 150 yards). Some would die pretty quick some crawl & crawl. Most (but, not all) was past 100 yards and really started showing up at 125 - 150. Funny round, I shot V-Max's right through 2x4's @ 100 and other times hunting, it just expanded to much I guess,.......lot of spin there.
Some guys are having pleasing hunting results however. On the other hand the .22 Mag is getting a worst rap for accuracy now (my opinion) than it deserves, because of the hummers accuracy. Fact is @ 100 yards it's with in a quarter inch of the Hummer on groups. For hunting rather than bench that's fine. You can't stretch that out like with a center fire and say......"well that 1/4" makes a big difference at 300" because unless it's very small varmints prairie dog and down, you ain't gonna kill nothing quick with either.
I don't hang on to guns I don't use these days. The void was not filled. It was quite, but so is my 22 rim. It basically stretched out my woodchuck range from 50 yards with a 22 to 125 yards with the hummer as far as decent kill power. Not much........even though it would shoot tight to 150.
Personally, in hindsight I would get a 22 Mag and shoot the new Remington primo ammo (32 grain I think) for Woodchuck, Fox etc. size game. Prairie Dogs & smaller stuff I would use the hummer. I am back to just using the Marlin 22 semi auto for plinking critters around the house etc.
Just my .2 cents though..........keep in mind my mind set these days is ........you don't need a bunch of rifles for varmint, predator and a little bench shooting really.........thats called collecting.

Thanks for all the input gentlemen.I think I'm going to purchase a marlin 982VS 22mag.I don't hunt for chucks and in my area rarely get a shot farther than 100yds at a fox.I'm not much of a distance shooter.I have a 22-250 if I want to reach out there a little ways. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
