17 hmr issue

I know these are popular subjects to bring up a 17 hmr. But I have a buddy that own a Savage 93 17 HMR. He is having trouble with getting the spent shells to come out. He says that they get stuck and he has pulled to pull the shells out with pliers. First is there a quick or easy fix or it need taken to a gunsmith?? He need the the gun to take down the deer and the antelope on the range. (maybe a praire dog or two)

I have the same rifle. I've puy quite a few rounds through it with no stuck casings, and it's very accurate.

The neck portion of the chamber is dirty. I take a brush about the same size diameter as a 22 case put in on just one length of rod. Put a patch over the end of it, and chuck it up in a drill and use the patch on the brush to buff the burnt powder and crud out of the chamber.

We have two 93's and never had one stuck either So I did not have the answer

I recently came into a 93R17 that had this exact same issue every other case would stick clean or dirty chamber it didn't matter.
Very easy fix add another spring/clip that holds in the extractors, you can get this from Savage cost about $10 and takes about a week to get and 5 minutes to install.
Took it to the range and ran a box through with no stuck cases

There is plenty of room for two springs here is my bolt with two springs on it,
Note: you will have to do a little file work and open up the notches in the end to fit over the extractor's

I would say polish the chamber first and then try some mechanical fixes. Mine does it once-in-a-while, but rarely. I really hope that he is not seriously going to use the gun on antelope and deer.

No he does not use them on deer and antelope but he does live out on the range.
