17 HMR Problems

I had the back of the casees blow open. which blew the plastic clip to pieces out the bottom of mine. It was loud. I called remington they told me to send it to them. I did and few weeks later I got a phone call. They refunded the price of the gun plus a little.

I knew a guy with a Savage 17 that did the same thing. Put it up on rimfirecentral .com, they'll know for sure what is going on over there. Probably have a running thread on it already.

I have the same gun and shoot the same 17 grn. v-max made by Hornady. I love that little gun. It has quickly become my favorite gun to plink around with. I have not had any problems yet.

If you discover the reason/problem please post it here.

Thanks -Ron

I have seen that happen many times with cci's. the problem is when they make the cases they are working with such little brass that they tend to get stress cracks. i havent had it happen since the .17 has gotten more popular, but i always try to inspect them before i shoot. the remingtons are notorious for havin .17 rounds blow up in them. I think its due to the plastic components in the gun.

I don't think it is a Savage problem, I had the same thing happen with my CZ453. I found 1 cracked case and 1 that had a most of the neck blown off. It's kinda scary how much pressure builds up in there.

It appears to be a combination of two things ..... the first is primarily ammo related, some brass is harder than others and more prone to split. The second is chamber related ...... if the chamber is a little on the large end of tolerances, the shells with harder brass will tend to split more often.

The first solution is to try some different brands of shells. The second solution, if the first doesn't work, is to return the gun to the manufacturer for repair or replacement.

Brand doesn't make any difference, ALL 17hmr ammo is made by CCI in their Lewiston plant.

I've had the problem but only with the CCI ammo. So far I've not seen this neither the Remington or Hornady. With my gun it is not a cleaning problem as it seems I always have one out of the first 5 will split after it has been cleaned. Both the Remington and Hornady use the Hornady V-Max bullet and the CCI use a Speer TNT. I have look at both and the only thing that I see that might make a difference is the two types of bullets seem to have different crimp points, meaning the V-Max bullet sits a little deeper in the casing than the Speer TNT. So there is my two pennies.

I also have only had it happen with CCI now I think of it. Another possible solution is that the something fouling things up in the barrel was a burr or something like that. My gun hasn't done this after the first 100 rounds or so. Maybe the "burr" or whatever was in there wore down. However, I don't shoot the CCI's out of it anymore either.

It would be natural to believe that, but it doesn't appear to be true, although problems seem to vary from gun to gun and from batch to batch of shells used. Accuracy of the loads in different guns vary from brand to brand, and some of the loads seem more prone to cracking than others. Don't know why, as it is made in the same plant, but that's what appears to be the case from what the guys on Rimfire Central report.

jharrison don't let this change your mind about buying a Savage 17HMR. I have 2 of them and I have never had a problem with either one. Every so often you just get a gun that didn't get a much attention at the factory as the others. I am sure that all gun makers have this problem somewhere down the line. Like I said I have 2 17's and both are tack drivers.

coyoteman23 which mod. savage do you have in 17hmr ? i am long on 22 rimfires thought i may trade for a 17 .tack driver is what i want. savage treated me right on a mod. 12 -204 i had to send back .would'nt group, they put a new barrel on it for me . so i guess they would stand behind a 17hmr. jharrison----

Jharrison I have the model 93r17 FV and the model 93r17 BV. The FV is an older model and doesn't have the accu-trigger but it is a tack driver. The BV looks and feel awesome. I like the laminate stock and the beaver tail fore-arm. It is a jewel to shoot off hand with if you have a stock to wrap around your arm. I have taken about 6 coyotes with the FV. The farthest being about 175 yrd. It was a head shot. I longest shot to date was on a jack rabbit at about 225. I didn't hit him on the first shot though. It took about 4 shots to get the wind right. Some might argue with me that a 225 yrd shot is to far for a 17HMR but that rabbit was DRT. You should really look into getting a 17. They are a blast to shoot. I am in the market for a 17 mach 2 now.
