17 HMR

Im planning on getting a 17 HMR does anyone own a Marlin Model 917VS? Is it a good gun? I was at the range today and a guy was having problems with his, he had to take it apart twice, but he said he bought it used. Im also considering one from savage. Can anyone recomend any others.

I have an NEF 17 HMR, topped with a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 SF. I love it. Shot several p-dogs out West with it this year, at a variety of ranges, some over 200 yards. Shot some sparrows around the yard and a couple rabbits. I have had no problems, not much to look at though. They are inexpensive, but a quality firearm.

My 17HMR from savage was the first firearm I purchased. I must say that it is a heck of a good rifle. I took it out prairie dog hunting and had a blast. My friend went with me the next time, and afterwards immediately went out and bought a savage hmr himself. Both of them are tack-driving machines, and it is my go to rifle for everything smaller than a coyote. (We all know what everyone's opinion is on using it for coyotes or larger...) Savage is the way to go in my opinion, except that you will want to do some work on the trigger, and give it a good cleaning as there tend to be some small metal shavings in the bolt and action that need to be handled. But haven't had a problem with either of our two yet!

I have a Marlin 17HMR and I love it. After a little trigger work it shoots great. I took a lot of wood chucks and crows with it this past summer and at some distance.

I have 2 Marlins, a 917V and a 917VS, both have Rifle Basix triggers in them, they shoot excellent, sub moa any time. The only problems I've had with em is the magazine guides needed a little adjustment so they would feed properly, took about 5 seconds to fix that.

I also have a CZ452 American, nice rifle looks nicer, better fit and finish, but doesn't shoot any better than any other 17hmr, but does cost more. I have an NEF Sportster also, it shoots just as good and it cost just $125 with scope.

Take your pick of any of them, you won't go wrong, just get the one that you like best. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

There's a 917VS for sale at RFC...

I don't think the CZ costs that much more after you do the trigger mods! Rifle Basix triggers for the Savage and the Marlin cost a little over $70 delivery. The CZ trigger mod is $15 but I agree they all shoot the same.

The Brookie kit didn't work in mine, had to go with the AS sear at $60, that and the $350 for the American make it considerably more. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Varmint Slayer,

I had the Savage 93r17gv (heavy barrel, wood stock,"target" by Savage standards).

For a couple hundred dollars its hard to complain. But, as you are seeking opinions here is mine.

The trigger was approx. 5 pounds sloppy and grind. I did a home trigger job on it. Then it was 3 pounds sloppy & grind. I prefer a clean crisp trigger regardless of pull.

The wood stock which was floated on the forward end, swelled in summer humidity. I open this with sand paper and a dowel, then sealed the entire inside of the stock with tung oil.
The black synthetic stock Savage hummers are very pliable. The laminated are best, followed by wood with the above done and then the black plastic. It averaged approx. 3/4" 5 shot group @ 100 off bags and decent wood bench with 20 power scope at 200 they open up to 2 1/2" - 3" average. The Marlins and CZ do about the same. The CZ has better quality workmanship and a better trigger. Savage and Marlin are about the same. I own another Marlin rifle besides. The Ruger's do not shoot quite as tight as the Savage, Marlins and CZ. My understanding is the CZ wood stock may also have to be opened up on the forend.

Although a real fun, cheap target rifle. I did not find the hummer to have enough killing power to equal it's flat shooting range on Woodchuck size game ( 7 - 14 #'s). Another words it is flat to 150 yards but at 150 yards had mixed results on well placed shot's. It may do well on smaller Prairie Dogs. It was more reliable at 50 to 100 yards. Because of this for Fox and Woodchuck size game in hindsight I would recommend a 22 Mag. For Prairie Dog size game at a distance (150 yards)and bench a hummer. For squirrels in tree's good ole 22.

I just got back from the gun store, looked at all the 17s they had. They kept running out of the Savage Model 93R17-BVSS they had plenty Marlin 917V and 917VS. I noticed they had alot of used ones too. They didnt have any used Savage 93R17. So I think that I'll probably go with the Savage. I'll probably get the accu trigger on it too.

I just dont like the idea of getting the Marlin after seeing the guy at the range having problems with his and then seeing the used ones in the gun shop.
Im not saying Marlin doesnt make good guns because I own a model 60 .22 and I love it. But why buy a gun that i may have problems with?

i have spoken with many folks that had or have the bsa sweet 17 scope. my father loves it, and so do many on this site. not certain if i will replace my present nef 17hmr scope for the sweet 17 yet - 2 folks said that their cross-hairs broke out right away, but their replacements still work. lifetime wrty.

Bill227,
Did your Savage have the new Accu-Trigger, or was it a pre-Accu-Trigger model? My experience with Accu-Trigger is outside of a custom trigger made specifically for me...it's the best over the counter trigger in a non-custom gun. I see most, if not all the Savage 17HMRs are being equipped with Accu-Trigger now. Buy the Savage.

Mine was pre- accu for the .17hmr. Did they add it to the rimfires line ? If so that will help the rimfire world.

I have shot Accu-Trigger's. Try a Tikka T3 someday (same price range as Savage's higher ends) and let me know what you think of the trigger. I prefer it. The good news is if Savage goes Accu Trigger on rimfires, others will have to shape up or ship out. Triggers on most rimfires under $1000.00 target grades were/are toy box,pot metal, tin junk.

Good for Savage !

Before you buy anything look at the CZ 452 varmint offering. This gun flat shoots. In the long run you're at the mercy of "factory loaded ammo" so the key element for me would be to get the one that felt the best.

I have shot my friend's savage 17HMR (synthetic stock and blue floating bull barrel). It's a great shooter. Does a pretty good job on feral cats too!

I just bought my son a Wally World Savage 17hmr for his birthday this Saturday. It hasn't been shot yet but it looks and feels like a good little gun for under $150. He's a little timid and I didn't want to scare him away from shooting. I know its not enough gun for a coyote but I'll have my .243 for backup!

Bass Pro Shops has them listed at:

$69.99 - 2-7x32
$99.99 - 3-12x40
$149.99 - 6-18x40AO

I firmly believe that the higher the power of the scope on these guns, the better.
