17 Remington 17/223 Upper Barrel Length

I am throwing around the idea of having an upper built in one of the above calibers. Would be able to handle a 24" barrel if it was the same diameter as my .223 Colt HBAR Elite. Has anyone gotten good results in any barrel shorter than 24"?
 
My 17/223 is 22" long. 20 grainers are clocking 4100 to 4200 with IMR 8208 and cci 450 primers. It's a standard contour and a pdog laser. A real blast to shoot, absolutely vaporizes small feathered creatures.
 
I have a 20" 17 rem. I don't have a crony but I like the upper. But if I did it again I'd do 17/223 or 17/204 just for the brass
 
I Went with a 17-223 with a 24 inch barrel. IMR 4064 and 25 grain vmaxes at 3950. There is room left, but this is where accuracy was best for this bullet/powder.
