Ok, on the shelf at my lgs they've got hornady ammo with the vmax bullet 2550 fps. Right next to it they've got hornady "varmint express" that's more expensive. There's a $3 difference in price, but what's the real difference? I didn't see mention of it on the hornady website.

There really is no difference, just personal preference and advertisement. If you're willing to pay three more bucks for a better looking package, go with the Varmint Express. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Hornady make two types for the .17 HMR. One is a 17 gr v-max and the other is a 20 gr xtp. That could be the difference. Hope this helps.

I ended up at the same store today and had them pull a box of each. Both have the 17 grain vmax, both stated velocity at 2550. The only difference I could see is the VE rounds had a brighter red to the tip. And the label was prettier /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Apparently the name change is enough to justify (in the owners eyes) the price difference.

One is for varmits the other is for bear and elk. LOL.

Made me laugh.............

Couple extra grains in bullet weight definitely place it squarely in big game medicine.
