.17 WSM range trip

Took my .17 WSM Savage B mag out for a trip to the range today. I wanted to test the 20 gr vs 25 gr ammo again at 100 yds to see if my prior results were a fluke. It looks like they were not and my rifle definitely likes 20 gr ammo better. I would have liked to have seen less shift in POI since reports online have indicated at times the .17 WSM ammo is hard to find...luckily for me so far that hasn't been the case but I'd like to be able to use either if one or the other is unavailable without sighting in my rifle.

The group on the left is the 20 gr and the group on the right is the 25 gr....I allowed 10-15 seconds between shots which likely wasn't enough considering the groups but I did repeat the test 3 times and each time the results were the same so I guess I'll stick with 20 gr as long as it's available

100 yards. The group isn't bad but the gun will shoot a much better group if more cool time it allowed between shots....the problem with the B mag is that the barrel is so thin...if they had done the same rifle in a bull barrel I think it would be much more accurate... the poi shifts a lot as the barrel heats up.

When allowed to cool for at least a minute between shots this was a previous 100 yard group with 20gr and 25gr ammo....the 20 gr group is on the bottom....they were also 5 shot groups...the results with the 20 gr did have me excited basically there were 2 elongated sets of holes that were touching with the single flier....that group was under .5"

My next trip to the range with the Savage I'll allow more cool time and see if I can consistently produce those groups or if it was a lucky group.

Cool! I'm wondering the on-animal performance of the two bullets, esp when it comes to coyotes. The 20 gr seems a bit light in the 17 Hornet (~ 3600 fps?), but it has been killing yotes for some guys with good bullet placement. Wondering if the 17 WSM with the 25's might not penetrate deeper with usable expansion? Been watching around online, but seeing nothing so far on field reports.

Thanx for the range report!

I haven't been out coyote hunting in awhile but the next trip I take I'm going to take the Bmag...hopefully I'll have a report on a coyote within the next few weeks. I've scouted a few spots that should be very good for calling.

That would be sweet...I think if you could get a nice beefy barrel in 18" length you'd still have plenty of velocity and you'd get rid of a lot of the stringiness.

I watched Winchester Legends on OLN and they were smacking yote's with the B-Mag. No runners and they were shooting the 20's.

I watched that show, seemed to me that every dog they shot with the 17 WSM they shot at the same time with a 243. Not sure that the shots were conclusive.

yeah I believe that black gun they had last night was a 243. I went on there website to look for that single shot they where using but it was not on there
