.17 WSM

Any fans of the 17 WSM out there?

I have used the WSM on coyotes for a couple of years now and I know it works. Of course shot placement is key and keeping the ranges sensible is the best way to ensure a humane kill.

Anyway just testing the waters for any fans or critics of the little rimfire that could.

I like it. I don't have one but my buddy does. I've killed a coyote, grey fox, beaver, opossum, armadillo, jackrabbits and a bunch of prairie dogs with it. Believe it or not the coyote I shot was a little over 100 yards and that little bullet went clear through it on a broadside lung shot. I know one coyote isn't much to base an opinion on but I do know it's far more superior in power to either the .22mag or .17hmr which I've killed a lot more critters with.

Ya its hard to believe a 20 grain .17 cal bullet will pass through a coyote but it happened to me enough times to be more than a fluke. Really nice on fur and less mess when skinning

I picked up one of those for my Contender last spring. Shoots very accurate and does a number on the ground squirrels, but I do get a lot of light strike misfires. Have 3 centerfire barrels and it doesn't do it ever on those, so the wsm heavy case would seem to require more strike force to ignite reliably.

As for the wsm caliber, haven't shot it at a coyote ever, but if I was in a rimfire only area I'd for sure give it a test since it has the most energy of all the rimfires. But since shots where I'm at can often be long, I stick with 204 or 223 for coyotes.

We have killed a lot of coyotes with a WSM and they work fine kinda close, My boy uses a 17 hornet and 25 gr I think but it will FLAT out flatten a coyote all the way out to 300 yards. We have pass through and some Big holes for such a small bullet.

I have been using Winchester ammo and some federal as well and for some reason i get a no fire on the 25gn only, i have even turned the round and refired it and still didn't go off. Doesn't bother me as the 20gn shoots better in my savage b-mag anyway and seems to kill em better too.

I bought one a couple years ago. I shot a couple coyotes both were DRT. Where I think it really shines for what I do is calling raccoons, almost as if that was all it was intended to do. But if I had a bobcat or coyote show up to a raccoon distress call I'm very much confident in the cartridge.

I bought one of the B mags this past summer, hoping it may replace the 17 Hornet for my task.
Those using the Contender or G2, I got to the point of changing hammer springs fairly often when I was shooting IHMSA.

Hows everyones accuacy? I bought the b-mag taget and it shoots around .6 to .75 inch at 100 on a bipod. Is that par for the cource or was the target version worth the extra dough.

My buddy has a heavy barreled one and it'll stack three shots practically on top of each other at 100 yards. Another buddy has one without the heavy barrel and and it doesn't shoot nearly as good. Another buddy of mine has the heavy barreled version, plus a Boyds stock on his and its a good shooter. I haven't seen it on paper but I head shot around a dozen jackrabbits down in Texas a few years back with that rifle. I was impressed with it. I know for a fact if you put that little bullet in the right spot on a feral hog it'll be dead as a hammer too.

I have had decent accuracy with mine. I don't claim to be a great shot by any means. here is a target i shot resting off the hood of my car at about 100yds, last winter if I remember right. It's at least minute of raccoon lol. This is with a heavy barrel and the plastic factory stock by the way.
