17HMR game points?

Are they the 20gr XTP shells? I checked their web page and they have the 17gr vmax and the 20gr XTP but nothing about a game point.

Today I purchased a new CZ 452 American. Nice looking gun. Haven't shot it yet but hope to remedy that very soon. I also picked up two boxes of ammo - the only ones the store had. They are CCI Gamepoint 20 gr. and Hornady 20 gr. XTP. Don't know how they will shoot. My question is, have any of you used either of these loads on game? What would you consider to be the largest reasonable animal to hunt with these? This is my first 17 HMR.

Thanks.

One thing I learned about the 17 HMR is that it pays to try all the available ammo for it. Some shoots great from my rifle and some terrible and it does seem to vary from one rifle to the next.

have a marlin 917v with a leopold 3x9 rifleman. feder v-shock polymer tip 17 grains work very well for me. on a good day without drinking several cokes i can shoot .5inch groups or better at 100yds. the hollow point federals work just as good, but the local stopped stocking them. i have only shot rabbits and a few squirrels. it is more than enough power.

My rifle will shoot 1/2" 5-shot groups at 100 with either of the 20gr loads. The 20's were made to hopefully turn the .17 HMR into a predator round. I would use it if hunting a rimfire only area but not anywhere else. I have not see it anchor PD's on a consistenty basis with the 17's or 20 gr bullets at 100 yds and beyond and have shot tons of 17 HMR ammo in the field.

The CCI Game Point has a larger hollow point than the Hornady.

We tested seven varieties of .17 HMR ammo for our upcoming video, "Dogbegone, and Beyond!". The comprehensive test at 50 and 100 yards has some surprising (and some expected) results.

The CCI game points ranked 6th out of 7 at 50 yards, and 4th out of 7 at 100 yds. Not terribly impressive.

The worst performer, bar none, was the Federal TNT load. 1.79" @ 50 yds!!!

Of course, these results were obtained with my rifle, a NEF Sportster. Your Savage, Ruger, etc., wil digest these loads differently.

Now you have my attention as mine is a NEF Sportster as well. Can you tell me what was at the top of your list?

I have had pretty impressive results from the Hornady HP 17 gr. but I have not went to extreme lengths to test. I focused more on 100 yd shots and some moving target shooting.

The NEF is a super accurate gun, but the single shot is a pain at times. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

You think it's a pain now, wait until NEF changes over to extractors instead of ejectors on their rimfires!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Sorry hoss, I can't give away the whole store!

Video'll be out before doggin season though...

I shoot a Marlin 917vs, and I LOVE this gun. I have a nikon Pro Staff 4x on top. I've killed woodchucks, a bunch of gray squirrels, and a ruffed grouse that i happened to catch on the ground. I wouldnt go after anything bigger than a big woodchuck or a varmit of similar size.

The first woodchuck I shot i couldnt find any holes, until i touched its head and the whole thing felt like jello. Very small entrance with no exit.

Yes, woodchuck and fox size game to 100 yards with well placed shots. basically, double what my , 22 lr's will do at 50 yards with 40 grains.

Well shoot. I won't need to buy it unless it comes with prarie dogs. We don't have any of those here. I guess I will have to ask someone who gets the video. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I can keep a secret. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
