.17wsm coyote

Done a lot of reading here, first post. Great site.

I've had problems with my bmag since day one. Long story short, sent it back because it wouldn't group 1 1/2" at 100 yards as gaurenteed with the sporter barrel. They sent me a new one, and it came with a scope as well. It also included 2 targets to show their100 yard group. I put my scope back on (Redfield 4-12x40) and my groups were still terrible, 3"+. I had recently picked up a new box of ammo, so I thought I'd try the new ammo. I shot 2 seperate 5 shot groups at 100 yards. 1 with my original box of 25gr, 1 with the new box.

1-5 were with the new ammo. I'm pretty confident #2 was more me than anything. Then shots 6-10 were with my original box of ammo. Huge difference.

I have not tried the test with 20gr bullets, but I do have a box of them that Ibought shortly after my first box of 25's, and they don't group either.

I apologize if my link to my picture doesn't work. Couldn't figure out how to post a pic...

Wolverines,

That is EXACTLY what I saw with the ammo too. The 25s I have are older and are awful. The 20s I have are brand new and shoot excellent groups. I need to pick up a new box of 25s and compare them to the box of old ones. I'll try to post my target pics if I still have them.

First pic is 25 gr rounds. This was about the best group I could get. If you look close, it almost looks like the bullets are tumbling just a bit...especially compared to the pic of the 20 gr rounds.

This pic is the 20 gr rounds. Shooting was 100 yards and just sitting down using my tripod as a rest. When I get time and a new box of 25s I am going to put it in the lead sled and see what I can really do with it.

Just an FYI, if it has not been mentioned already. Savage is now shipping all new B.MAG rifles with a 1:8" twist. They are saying that the new twist handles both bullet weights with more consistency.

I have not had any issues with any of my (3) 17WSM rifles (two B.MAGs and Contender), but I shoot only the 20 grain bullet offerings.

I will be getting the Franklin Armory upper here in the next week, or so. I am looking forward to have the quick follow-up shots on ground squirrels and prairie dogs!

Eric,

I read some of your write up and articles on the F17-L right before I bought mine. Thanks...you cost me some money! The service from Franklin Armory was phenomenal. Mine had the gas port just a touch under spec. They paid for return shipping, fixed it and had it back to me in less than 2 weeks. They fixed it and shipped it back out the same day they got it. It has been flawless since and with new runs of ammo is "shoot em in the eye" accurate. I can't wait to get time to hunt with it more.

Agreed, great rimfire cartridge. I do not trust my bmag enough to take it hunting though. I have had a few misfires with it, and I would hate to have one with a dog in the crosshairs. I use it more for a cheaper light range gun. I do like the caliber and looking forward to the advancement of it. For now though, I'm sticking to my POF or Rem 700.

Rimfires are night time legal for coon and possum in CT. But if a yote attacks me I'm prepared. No other hunting at night allowed here. But Yote season is open all year.
