.17wsm coyote

Been a while since I've been on here mostly because most my predator hunting is jan-march
Anyway last night I was bow hunting get at my camp and as I got back to the camp I could hear a few yote going nuts behind my food plot. So I quickly went in grabbed the fox pro,.17wsm, and my high tech redneck NV set up . Started off with some usual dying rabbit stuff with no luck . Then switched to hotels mimicking the howls they were doing and the lit up again went back and forth for a few min then nothing . So after a while I called it quits. I have a shooting bench on the back porch so I went I to the camp. About 1/2 hr later I went out on the porch and looked and as soon as I turned the NV on I saw the yote . I quickly shot and lost sight. Shot was 100yds. I was a little doubt full as the .17wsm is a really little bullet and I lost sight of it at the shot, I've seen so dogs take a .243/.223 and run 100yds .
Anyway went out this am and she went no where anchored her right there. Tiny Lil hole behind shoulder no exit. I was impressed

I used the 20 grain V-max bullets. I'd like to see other company's make a gun. I'm not crazy about the gun and it's cock on close. But it's accurate enough to take coyotes to 125yds to maybe 150....beyond that I think know there is to much wind drift and bullet drop for my liking. I mainly bought it because it is a night time legal gun here in mass.
A lot easier on fur than my .243 &.223

Heck yeah! I'm thinking of getting a 17 wsm. I was Impresed with the 17hmr on prairie dogs and fox. Nice shot man!! Keep it 100%!

Good to see some results finally from the .17 wsm. Apparently it's very capable.

You mentioned night vision equipment, what specifically did you use?

I too have the .17WSM. I have killed 5 coyotes with it since last winter. One red fox too. Longest kill shot was about 240 yards according to Google Earth. I probably would not have tried a shot that far with that gun and cartridge (20 grain) but I was hunting with my buddy and we did the old "1,2,3". We are sure that my shot is the one that connected. Earlier in the morning he missed a chipshot and discovered later that day that something inside his scope had broken loose. The hole in the dog was also evident of the smaller round. Nice small entrance hole with no exit. The dog basically dropped in his tracks. Buddy was shooting .22-250.

Where I live, Michigan, you have to use a rimfire rifle while hunting at night and the .17WSM, in my opinion, is the best rifle/cartridge for our state.

I have yet to send any 25 grain rounds through the barrel. My buddy says he doesn't get as tight of groups with the 25's. If I can't find someone with ammo on the shelf at a reasonable price, will have to get the 25's out anyway.

Steelie you must of been aiming pretty high....I found at 240yds it drops 12+ "....and just doesn't have the accuracy at that range as my center fires do...

Those were internet yards.

Is holding 5MOA inhibitive? Whether a B Mag is accurate enough to make it happen notwithstanding, 5moa hold (12" at 240yrds) really isn't that much.

Great to hear, I sat out with a .17WSM this last Nov. my 1st bonified time to coyote hunt. It was windy and doubt I knew what I was doing. I've trapped a couple of coyotes but never taken one hunting. Your take is pretty encouraging. Google earth does stretch distances sometimes, but any shot 200yds for a rimfire would qualify you as a predator sniper; DRT, outstanding!

I really like the caliber buy having some issues with gun misfiring. I pull the trigger and it clicks, firing pin makes a mark in rim but nothing. It cost me 2 coyote one at 10 yards, and 2 fox in the past week. Looking for suggestions

Wow...I've put maybe 150-200 rounds through my b-mag and never had that issue. I just hate the cock on close...other than that it's ok...not quite centerfire accuracy but good enough to take yotes to 150yds

I've heard issues with the ammo from Winchester not having the greatest quality control, but those issues were with accuracy and not the same problem that your having.

That's not the usual problem with the little Savage. Contact and send it back to the company. They're good about repairing or replacing but it may take a month or longer.

Reportedly the Winchester ammo quality has improved and Hornady plans to produce the round in 2015. Boy, I'd be miffed if I sighted in on a yote and heard only 'click'
