just read about a guy shooting some longe range (1000yds) brench rest contest and he said he was shooting a rem.700 action and 180 gr pill @3000 fps.. the max i have tried is 2650 fps with a 180 gr.. i know every guns is different but this sounds like a miss print to me.just wondering what fps you comp. guys were pushing out there?

i know a guy that builds guns that will do this.he has a 7mmstw that will shoot 140gr pills at 4000fps.he also shoots the 1000 yd stuff.i seen this with my own eyes.

Are you sure he wasn't just referring to the diameter of the bullet rather than the cartridge itself? Lot's of .30 caliber rifles push a .308 diameter 180 grain bullet to 3,000 fps. I can't see a .308 Winchester chambered rifle doing it.

Probably a 300 Win...easy to get that velocity...common at a 1000 yard shooting...or a Custom Wildcat
or
Borderline 30-06
Easily also in 30-06AI,Weatherby,RUM,WSSM,Norma,30-338,H&H,30-378,etc.,etc.,etc.

If it is a .308 Win case at that pressure, technically it is a Wildcat since it is over pressure for a standard .308 Win

There is no way you could do that in a .308 Win unless it is waaay over pressure standards. Even then you are out of case capacity before you get to 3k with most common powders. You would be about 200ft/sec slow. To keep pressure down, have enough case capacity to achieve 3000ft/sec you will need to go below 168 grain.

it was a a 308 he was talking about guys he was comparing the flat shooting of the 3000fps compared to the standard 2550fps.plus there is a pic of the rifle & empty case setting on the bench..I guess it was a typo because i've never heard a 308 @ 180gr pushing that speed.i've loaded 2650 and i was thinking that was fast..i've heard of bench shooters shooting faster but not that fast..
