18650 question

All of my lights use 18650 button top batteries.
I need to purchase some replacements now, is protected better than unprotected?

Protected. Buy good name brand batteries, sanyo, panasonic sony, stay away from high mAh batteries, claims of 4000 mAh and above are false

Yes, definitely get one's with a protection PCB. It protects against over/under charge and excessive heat, all of which can destroy the battery and device.

Running un protected batteries is the one thing that will void our warranty. They are a hazard and can cause fires. We offer a first quality battery and we test every batch that comes in to make sure they are putting out what we advertise. We offer a 3 pack for $37.99.

The 2 fancy 18650 batteries I've purchased on Amazon (Orbtronic 3400 mAh) have both died within a year. Meanwhile my 8 Wildlife Technologies batteries are going on 4 years of use without any issues. My 2 Fenix brand batteries are working great too.

The batteries that have failed are Ultra Fires. They are what came with my Wicked W13. The light uses 2 at a time. They take a charge, but do not last 20 minutes. The light just shuts off with no warning at all. I tried to figure out which battery was bad by putting them one at a time in my EWT 250 and leaving it on. Both batteries lasted over an hour without going dead. They just don't hold up in the W13. When they were new, I would go several days between charging and they never died.
When I charge them, after they die, the charger light goes from red to green very fast, jut like they were almost fully charged before going on the charger.
I only use this light for walking in/out, not scanning.
