1903 Remington Rolling Block

Last night a friend called and asked if I would help clean a "few" of his guns he inherited from his dad when he passed away. When he got outa of the truck and opened the tailgate he had 8-9 gun cases and a blanket wrapped gun. The first was a Mauser action 22-250 with a 16 power Unertle Varmint scope. The wood had been worked w/ a custom cheek piece. Great looking wood and a heavy custom barrel of unknown make. I thought I was in heaven. We finally got into the other cases and out comes a Remington Rolling Block w/ a short heavy barrel stamped .257 (nothing else on the barrel). On the metal in the grip it is marked "Remington 1903". The wood was absolutely incredible. Looked like a French Walnut w/ heavy burl in it. Very old and custom looking. Looks like at one time the Unertle was mounted on it due to the mounting brackets on the barrel. The others in the cases were rimfire .22's from Mauser and another from the eastern block.
What a blast !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They had been setting around for the last 20 years. It was an honor to spend some time with these very fine pieces.
If anyone knows anything about the Remington Rolling Block let me know. Looked like a custom barrel. I did a little research on the Rolling Block and couldn't find any info on that caliber in that rifle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And the answer is no, nothing is for sale. Way to much sentimental value to the owner.

Kind of brings back a lot of memories from when I was in my teen years. baught an old beat up 7mm remington rolling block from Winefield arms and some pre- ww1 military rounds. (that's all I could afford)and had a blast.!! The barrel had been shot out years before, but boy could that old rifle shoot!!I used to outshoot my friend's m1 Garand every time we went to shoot at fish canyon, it got so he wouldn't go with me any longer.
I know I'm not helping. Just taking a stroll down memory lane.

Good luck getting the information you want

The 257 on the barrel indicates just the bore diameter from the barrel maker. A chamber cast is in order for that one. If your freind inheritted any reloading equip, any 25cal dies might give a hint to the cartridge. I'd still do a chamber cast.

Rolling blocks have been a favorite for custom builders since before WW2 A chamber cast is a deffinate must do. But I am thinking from the discribed age of it and the others it may be a 257 Roberts as that was a favorite custom caliber as well. Should be a great deer and antalope rifle.
