1st time bow hunter... Broadhead opinion?

I have taken many deer with the 4 blade 90gr Muzzy. Muzzy makes a great head.

I now use the slick tricks, I am amazed at their accuracy and blade sharpness.
 
Muzzy,Wasp,Thunderheads,start with a good fixed head and try expandables later if you want to experiment after you are comfortable with your equipment and shooting.
 
I have had muzzy's work great for years but am always looking for the next best thing...used rages 2 years ago and they will never sit on my arrows again due to one blade opening in the air and causeing a miss at 25 yds, last year I hunted with the G5 montecs and believe this to be a very good fixed blade but had troubles getting all the arrows to group with these heads, took a bit of arrow selection but finally found 3 that would shoot the same for hunting...this year, after all my summer reseach, I have narrowed my choice down to the " ulmer edge" or the "swhacker"... I am actually leaning towards the swhacker.
 
I just shot a buck with rage 2 blade 100 grain @ 20 yards just a week ago. double lung and nicked the heart. buck went 40 yards and died right where he fell. i haven't shot any other deer with it yet, but that was a strong kill with little worry about performance in my book.

I'd choose the muzzy. I'm just not a mechanical fan.
I shot the rocket steelheads when they first came out and killed several animals without a loss. But IMO mechanicals in general are a pain. Rubber bands, blades try to open puting them in quiver, energy loss durring blade deployment, glances on heavy quartering shots.
This will stir a few people up lol! They were originaly designed as a fix all to aid shooters lacking experience to tune the new fast bows that were hitting the market. I wont argue that many people use them with great success. And design has come a long way but not for me. Old school I guess.
 
To the guys saying about shot placement with their broadheads..yes shot placement is important but if that's your reason for your broadhead choice you mise well tell the guy to use a field point. All these mechanical broadheads are crap..think like this..would you like to know your broadhead is gonna cut on contact? Would you use a broadhead that's been awhile for awhile with crazy results? I've seen many deer get away with these bad mechanicals..I like to know mines ready to roll. Cut on contact and Don't reduce energy from your shot to open. Muzzy says it all. Price wise is a considerable variable too! Goodluck!
 
I'd go w/ Muzzy out of those two.

If ur just starting out, here is what I've notice about different style of heads over the years. I have no loyalty to any brand or head, but rather prefer different heads for different big game species and hunts. I'll probably get ripped here, but oh well...

Chisel point heads - the point has to 1st punch thru the hide and it seems some deer are frightened by this, then run hard and fast (and sometimes far if not hit well) after being hit
Cut on contact heads - excellent penetration, deer often fail to realize they are hit and tend to fall while looking back at the crime scene, but they typically drift more with wind if ur taking long shots
Expandables - risk of blades opening in flight, risk of blades not opening after hit, some require energy to open so it pays to shoot a heavy draw weight, field point accuracy, less wind drift, capable of awesome holes/blood trails
Vented blades - noisy during flight
Non-vented blades - more wind drift
Steel ferrules - awesome durablity and are often re-useable
Aluminum ferrules - they hold up, but often bend after shooting 1 animal

No matter what you choose, stay within your lethal distance and good luck this fall
 
Many goood blades out there. Ive been using Snypers for the past 4 years. Dont make them any more, I just buy replacement blades. If I was going to buy new, I would give the rage a shot...
 
Well we can only use fixed blades here but i started out using wac em's way back when acurate and sharp blades are a little thin on them [beeep] shot an elk with shuttle ts this year wasnt impressed at all with them. Muzzy's wouldnt be a bad choice either.
