2/17 Night

A friend of mine and I hunted some of his farm land last night.

Our first set was on a hill with an old overgrown fence row behind us and a cut corn field in front. The field went down hill then back up on the opposite side from us with a huge clear cut behind it. (I heard that they were clearing around 500ac for a new solar panel field.) As I scanned the field there were herds of deer in every direction and hardly any wind. I told my friend that I was going to start off with cagie cottontail and I did. About 12 minutes into calling we both notice the herd of deer over on the next hill get really spooky and some of them even took off. I told my buddy to keep watching them because there may be a coyote over behind the trees that we couldn't see. Sure enough, right as I scan back over my buddy said "there he is, he's scaring the deer". A really nice size coyote came out of the cut over and was working it's way to our left. I told my buddy that he was probably trying to get down wind of the call and he replied "he's actually on a road, he's walking right down the road". This is the first time I had ever been on the property so I didn't know that he was walking down the "road" that cut across the fields. I told him to just wait until the coyote was closer and whenever I told him to, blast him. We both watched as he got closer and closer then whenever he got within about 100 yards I told my buddy, "okay whenever you feel comfortable". He kept coming and coming, speeding up. I told my buddy that he needed to stop him and shoot him and he replied "I don't feel comfortable, you shoot him". I asked him he was talking about and he said that he just sighted in his scope that day at like 50 yards and he wasn't comfortable shooting it. So I told him to step over to my rifle and he said "no, shoot him I just want him dead". I said okay and started hollering at him. Finally he stopped at about 50-60 yards, but he also spotted us. Right when he started to turn a hard quartering to I drilled him right behind the shoulder. He hit the dirt then got up and ran about 50 yards with a softball sized hole blown through him. I thought I seen a second come out of the cut over, but never seen it again so after a few vocals we ended up leaving.

In the truck I asked my buddy what the deal was and he said that he just didn't feel comfortable shooting and I told him that if we called in anything else that he could use my rifle, I enjoyed called them in and watching them get hammered through my scanner and as much as I liked shooting them.

So set number two was actually in his parent's back yard. Straight in front of us was a clear field for about 150 yards then a field of broom straw and behind it another over grown clear cut from a few years ago. This is where we expected them to come from, but about 7 minutes into cagie cottontail I scan to my left and there's a big coyote walking through the woods trying to get down wind of the call. This coyote had to walk almost across his parents' front yard to get to us. So I tell my buddy to get on my rifle and again he told me to go ahead and shoot. We are arguing back and forth about him shooting when the coyote either seen or heard us and turned around and started walking off. So I finally hollered at him and he turned broadside and drilled him. Another perfect shot and he never moved. After that I tried some vocals, but nothing so we left.

3rd set

We went to another farm that wasn't too far from the first. Almost same set up as well. I figured the rabbit worked the past two stands so why change. About 5 minutes into calling I scan to my left and there's a big cat making it's way to the call. We just sat and watched the cat for a while as it sat on it's butt looking at the call. After about ten minutes I guess he got bored and wondered back down the field. A few minutes later I see something pop out into the field on the next hill a few hundred yards away, but I also feel that the wind shifted and is blowing right to it. Just as fast as it was there, it was gone. I told my buddy that I'm pretty sure we just got busted. I went through some vocals and got nothing. After about 20 more minutes we decided to leave and just as we got to the truck we heard two coyotes open up right where I seen the one enter the field. I sat the call on the ground and we got the rifles back on the tripods. The one coyote got within about 150-200 yards, but wouldn't stay still and stay out of a low spot. They knew we were there from the wind shift so we had no luck with them.

Overall, it was a good night. I also told my buddy that before we went again we were going to buy a few boxes of ammo and get him comfortable shooting out to 200.

Great night out! Too bad about your buddy. Some folks get nervous shooting in front of people. I’ve seen it before myself. Get him out shooting. Throw a few intentional flyers yourself so doesn’t feel like he’s terrible at it if he doesn’t shoot great.

Congrats on the double!

You know...

I don't know what the issue was. He's like me, he's been hunting his entire life and has killed countless deer, ducks, doves, turkeys, etc.
