Which one of these calibers are quiter or is there any diff. I need a good coyote/ cat gun that is pretty quite.

I have use a 22 mag at this place with good results on the Bobcats, but not on the coyotes. Thanks

With out a decible meter, I don't know that I can tell a difference... I always use different levels of hearing protection and they sound the same to me.

With the same barrel length I can't really tell the difference. I have loaded the 223 down to starting loads and below with powders such as RL#7 and IMR 4198 and it does reduce the noise level considerably. Havn't tried reduced loads in the 204 yet.
Barrel length is also a consideration. The 24" 223 is not as loud as a 20".

I Would bet they are close, 2 days ago I got to finaly hold my 223 right next to a 204, the 204 shell in a lttle bigger so I would think the 204 is a little louder, but just a tiny bit. Just for you info, I was about 100 yards away through some brush when they guy fired it, and it wasn't very loud at all.

t/c223encore.

I've got both, and fancy fast stepping 204 handloads louder than the 223. Kind of like a 22-250 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Ouch is the word that comes to mind.

So a 223 is not a loud as a 22-250. I know my 22-250 is very load.

Yes a 223 is definately quieter than a 22-250. When hunting Preds with my 700 Rem (223, 24 inch barrel) I can tolerate the sound and not have ringing ears all afternoon.

Not so with the 22-250.

Converesly a 16 inch AR chambered in 223 is as loud or louder to my ears than the the 24 inch 250.
