.204 Ruger

I have talked myself into trying this new caliber..... I just need to know how much they cost (I will be going to my dealer to check prices) but, I am looking for a "cheap" beat em' up hunting rifle....... I will probably paint it before I even fire the first round.

I'm not particular about what brand of rifle it is..... I was just wondering if anyone had some Ideas on where to get a really cheap one somewhere? I saw that Remington has a 'Model 700 SPS' in the .204 for $520 (msrp). Usually how much difference is there between 'msrp' and actual selling price?

.... also isn't there a website where there alot of guns for sale by owner?

Thanks

bl00dtrail,

I have seen .204 in the Remington SPS - blued for $399 at Sportman's Warehouse. You may want to check out the Savage model 11 usually they run about $350 give or take. If a single shot will do - NEF runs around the $200 mark...Hopes this helps!

I paid $370 for my savage model 10 new. Absolutely LOVE it! It was 100% deadly on the PDs this afternoon. Lots of action and I saw it all through the scope. This round is sooo fast. I was shooting the factory Hornaday 40 gr.

I was soo nice this afternoon. Everything I put the cross hairs on up to 250 yds. was simply DEAD. So easy and so nice. Anything beyond and I had to start to compensate for the distance. I love it when a gun is so accurate, there's no wondering if you're going to hit your taget or not.

You have to ask yourself:
Do I want a heavy barrel? A sporter...a 'tweener(LV) or a bolt or single shot?

The heavy barrel bolt .204s are:
Ruger M77 Mk II KMT
Rem. 700 VS and VLS
Savage 12's (VBSS,VSS,VLSS and VF)
CZA has one...I think (527...)
...to name a few. All the above are darn good rifles, you couldn't go wrong. Personally, I think Winchester otta anty up and get the Win. "Coyote" BBL in with a .204. Afterall, they DO MAKE THE ROUNDS.

Single actions: Ruger No. 1
TC Contender
NEF Handi Rifle

Sporters: Rem., Ruger, Savage, Tikka, Browning (A Bolt) and there are more. Heck, there is a Les Baer AR in .204 now.

As far as which one's best out of the heavy's...I think it's a tie (At least from the big U.S. manufacturers):
Rem.
Savage
Ruger
pick one. They all go for around 700-800 bucks...UNLESS you special order through Wal-Mart AND they are in stock at their distributors. I picked up my Savage 12 VBSS LP for $608.88 (MSRP $778)through Wal-Mart. I was surprised they could get it for me. It wasn't on the website. One day I'll own ALL three. That way, when one gets hot...I can switch. The perfect compromise.

thanks fellas.....

I'm looking at a "hunting rifle" so I don't think the heavies would work out too well... I wouldn't want a rifle over 7 3/4 pounds (bare). Bolt action is the only way to go also.

thanks for the info..... I'll have to go out shopping /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

bl00dtrail, I bought a Remington SPS a couple weeks ago at Sportsmans Warehouse for $399. I have not shot it yet though. Finally got the ammo and all the other paraphernalia needed. Now I'm just waiting for a scope ring lapping tool. Hopefully will get to shoot it next weekend. As far as the rifle goes, my only complaint is the trigger is a bit on the heavy side. About 5-7/8 to 6 lbs. Crisp and no creep though. Easy fix. Fit and finish is very good. One very small area at the end of the stock that comes in contact with barrel. I can slide a piece of printing paper through the rest. Another easy fix if needed. Nice non reflective bead blasted matte black finish. Bolt slid nice and easy. Real smooth operation. The stock is different from the ADLs I've seen. The grip areas have a kind of textured (pebble) feel to them. I like it. Only thing I can't tell you is how it shoots. LOL! Hope to be able to say in the next week or two.

Anyway, several good .204s out there to choose from. Heard good things about Savage, CZ and others.

Good luck whatever you choose.
