Ok, I want a 204 ruger in the ar platform. 18”
I will be hunting/shooting suppressed and need advice on if I should build or buy?
My concern is basically making sure it function suppressed, I’ve had to screw with several 223/556 to get them right. If there’s a manufacturer out there making one who is it?
Thanks

Guess it depends on your budget? If you already have a AR you could invest in a quality upper . Specialized Dynamics can make you a full blown rig or just a upper ? Scott is a easy guy to talk to and would give you a few options to choose from .I do know a lot of his full blown builds using carbon barrels and quality parts are not cheap . Just a thought. But I love the 204 caliber would be neat to have one in a very very light weight ar platform for calling...

Im not an AR fan but do have one with two uppers 20P.and 223. Plus I've been wildcatting the 204 case for 19 years (22-204, 6mm-204, 25-204) and don't own an actual 204 chambered rifle. If you reload at all I'd look seriously at the 20 Practical over a 204 Ruger.

If you don't reload and have to shoot factory ammo, and, you want a 20 caliber your only option is the 204 Ruger. But, if you do reload and you are wanting this in an AR build, as already mentioned, you'd be better off going with a 20 Practical aka 20-223. Or, just make life easier for yourself all the way around and stick with the 223.

Yes I know a 223 AR is rather generic and everyone has one, two, or ten of them but even a middle of the road AR build will function and shoot well for you and in the long run it'll save you money, you'll spend less time tinkering, more time shooting and you will have a MUCH broader selection of bullets or even ammo to choose from.

204 Ruger ARs Make me happy. The last thing I killed with mine a was 2 for 1 coyote on the run and Dodge mega cab driver side mirror. BANG FLOP on the coyote Got the mirror with the muzzle blast. My daughter got her first Coyote with the 204 Ruger same trip, and her mirror survived no problem.

This is my 1st and only .204, i use either asc or cprod mags and have had zero issues. 18" wilson barrel +suppressor.
I've been handloading the 40gr vmax and as long as i do my part they have preformed very well on coyote, fox and bobcats.

Cool, I have an 18” barrel on the way.
As far as the ammo, I’m only using factory so 32gr and 40gr. Gonna see which groups and functions and go from there. Thanks

+3 on the 20 Practical. The AR was built for the parent cartridge. Same ballistics as the .204. Mags are built for the parent cartridge. Easy peasy.

Have any of you 204 Ruger folks ever shoot any of the Sierra factory loaded 204 ammo, particularly their Prairie Enemy 36gr BlitzKing ammo?

Sierra only uses these 36gr BK's in their factory loaded 204 Ruger ammo, they don't sell just the bullets. I believe the reason for them using these 36's instead of the 39's is because the longer 39gr BK's and 40gr Vmax don't always shoot well in all of the factory 12tw barrels.

My 204 Ruger is a off the shelf Tikka compact w/20in 12tw barrel. I've pretty much only shot 32gr Vmax in this Tikka and a CZ 527 Varmint I used to have but for factory ammo that Hornady stuff shot really well. I'm kind of curious if any of you have shot any of this Sierra 36gr BK ammo in your 204's and if so how well did it shoot for you??

I haven’t tried it but always wanted to give it a shot. Just never seen it in stock anywhere. And when I did find it in stock I had already heavily stocked up on what I currently shoot?

As for the 12 twist thing… my experience has been mixed.

Ruger 77 Mark-II w/ 24” barrel really Prefers 32-35 grain bullets. 40gr everything really opens things up. I shortened barrel to 22” and recrowned and 40’s shoot slightly tighter groups somehow but still not great? Best factory loads HSM 35 gr Berger Hollow Point Flat Base. Feeding issues in this gun forced me to switch to Federal ammo loaded with 32 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips.

Browning X-Bolt w/ 22” barrel shoots 32,35 and 40 gr loads great. Best loads again are the HSM with 35gr Bergers or Nosler ammo loaded w/ 40 gr Ballistic Tips.

All above listed ammo have proven to be very effective coyote loads. Hornady ammo has shot great, but terminal performance was lacking in my opinion. Had some splashes and lost animals that I feel wouldn’t be the case with what I now shoot.

I lnow it’s not what you asked, but sometimes I can’t control myself! Lol.

Be mindful of the 12 tw and 40 gr vmaxs it is hit or miss on them. I had to go to a 10 twist to shoot the 40s consistently. If you have a 12 tw serria used to make a 39 that would work.
Sierra still makes the 39-grain Blitzkings — just not very often. Saw some on a shelf recently; I have plenty, so left them for someone else.
