22-244 ballistics

There's a lot of published info., and a # of different designs of the .244 Rem. or 6mm Rem. (identical case) necked to .22. From what i've been reading about it lately, it's a pretty good performer with the heavier bullets in a faster twist barrel. Definitely right at the upper end of efficiency for the bore size, with any decent barrel life. A lot of guys believe the longer neck length of the 6mm case contributes to longer barrel life.

Hi CC,
I guess you are talking about the 22/6mm or as some have tried to rename the 224TTH. I shoot the 22/6mm. The man that built mine is also the one that developed it. I had quite a bit of first hand info on this particular cartridge. I mainly use mine for coyotes and medium sized game like deer and antelope. Heck of a flat shooter, perfect antelope gun. I shoot mainly Hornady 75 gr A-Max over 4831 SC. Another good bullet I found that is used for big game is RWS 74.5gr SP. This bullet is made more like a Nosler Partion.
This round was originally developed in Europe as the 22x57 to hunt Roe deer. The case necks on the European stuff is thicker and will not load in our guns. Harold Broughton ( my gun builder)went to the 6mm and began developing this cartridge for 1000 yard shooting. It will out perform the 300's at long distances with wind drift and bullet drop. He was using Sierra's 80gr HP. It is a finicky round and not for everyone. You can contact Greg Richards who is also a PM member for info on this. He is a gun builder and follower of Harold Broughton. Send me an E mail the next day or two and I'll get you more info on ballistics.

I read an article a buddy sent me several weeks ago on that TTH, and it was very professionally written. Anybody have a link to it? Come to think of it, it might have been on the Texas Trophy Hunters website.

Copycat,

The 224TTH (which is a 22-6mm) has my interest and I recall it was discussed previoulsy here. I did a search here in the Firearms forum and found the thread. You should do the same. There is some interesting discussion back on 4/13/02. There is also an article in the Texas Trophy Hunters website also.

For ya'lls info, Gregg Richards did the gunbuilding and load development on the TTH. CONTACT HIM PLEASE !!!!! Texas Trophy Hunters had some very misleading info reguarding the loads. Greg is a member of PM #6323 and resides in Hobbs NM.

It is a dandy yote gun. Check back in the Photos and you can see mine. It was under First Triple . I built mine on a Remington SS long action. You will need a long due to the long bullets used. The barrel is a Broughton, no longer made- Harold sold the barrel making business. Use a fast twist,1x7 or 1x8. A bud is using a 10 twist and shooting 55-60gr bullets. I like the 75 A-Max the best. Hart and Shilen both make excellent barrels. Stock is a grey laminate Fajen. Best powders I found are Hodgon 4831SC and Winchester WMR ( no longer made but can be found). Plan on spending several hundred dollars on this one. Don't go cheap and try to skimp. This gun creates a lot of pressure due to the underbore. Out of all the custom guns I own, this one has given the most fits. I would not recommend it to a novice reloader. Mine will shoot in the 4's at 100yds and .5 at 200. Bullet drop is like no other, hold dead on at 400. Hard to do, keep wanting to pull up a tad. Running the 75's on the hot end at over 3600. If you get serious about this cartridge don't hesitate to ask ?????? and lots of them. Another key contact is Greg Richards who uses this exclusivley 4barrles@gte.net .

Thanks for info. Bob I had already thought about a 700 LA and a Shilen. What do you think about a Boyds thumbhole Lam. Have any ideas where to get action.

I bought a brand new Remington SS BDL and tore it up.
Out came the 22/6. Like I say, don't skimp. Look for a long action BDL at gunshows, pawnshops or you might want to go with a ADL from Walmart. It is the cheapest route. Boyds are good, they have the Fajen stuff from what I've heard. If you go with it contact me or Greg for loading data. Greg is always tinkering with his. He shoots a lot of 1000 yard stuff and is a helluva shot.
