22-250, 60 grain sierra, hodgdon h-380

getfoxy,
The problem is that each rifle and ammo combination reacts differently to being exposed to 50,000psi plus. One rifle might take a real bucket full of powder and like it. Another might just take a pinch and can't take any more.

I'd start at a safe minimum load of 30gr of H380 and work up by .5gr increments to probably no more than about 34.5gr. But remember this. Its very, very tempting to get every inch of pace out of a 22-250. For that reason most guys will push the round to its limits, but if you have a look at the ballistics sheets there's little gain in going for that extra 50fps. That extra 50fps will burn barrels out faster, wear out brass quiucker and give you 2/10ths of nothing extra in field perfromance. What's more important is that it is accurate. To each his own, but I'd go for a moderate psi accurate load. Zipping past them at light speed won't scare them to death. You have to hit 'em.

FWIW

I understand this but I cannot find any load data for starting loads for H-380 in my manual. I loaded up some 50 grain V-maxes today behing 38 grains....Is this a little hot?

Ok we have a serious problem here...I tried to load the 60's ( the bullets are .224 dia.) they will not fit in my case? Explain this one to me because I am stumped.

The 50 grainers sit fine? What would cause this

It's unsafe making recommendations without being there, but then that's what a Forum does.

I'll take a swipoe and say that you are using 60gr Varmint (1375). I note they have a flat base. Like wybob said, yopu need to make sure that you have "very slight inside chamfer, but only slight. Too much and it promote split necks (Danger! Will Robinson Danger!).

Seat them half way, rotate the case 180 degrees and seat teh rest of the way.

Get Foxy, I shot the 60g Nosler Sp and the 60g Sierra Hp with a load of 39g of IMR 4350...it shot tiny bug holes.

The 60g Sierra is a very tough bullet, perhaps tougher than you would like...You will have to do a little load testing!

Good luck!

Thanks. I'm gonna try to work up a load with varget, and some 50 grain nosler bt's. That is when I get my new rcbs dies lol

Get foxy, Varget is pretty slow for the 50g, although some use it.

Benchmark is a whale of a powder for the 50's, start off at 36g and go up in .5g increments till you start seeing pressure signs and/or accuracy you like.

I shoot the 52g Sierra's IMR 3031@ 37g...averaging about 3650 fps from my savage model 11 22-250..22inch sporter barrel...does pretty well
