Guys wanted a short bolt action rifle for coyotes. Have a friend who has a kimber that I could pick up for a great price but I wanted a shorter barrel. how short could I have the barrel cut down and still have a shooter? Also is there a crown that is better than another? I was thinking 21"-22"
I started off looking for a remington model 7 in a 223 but can get the kimber longmaster classic cheaper and its only had about 150 rounds through it.

Much shorter than 22" and a .22-250 just gets too dang loud for my taste. You give up some velocity for every inch of barrel you chop off too, but for me, the muzzle blast is a bigger deal. Accuracy, every barrel is different and there are many variables, but generally it will get more accurate the shorter you go (but may be harder to tune, especially with a low expansion ratio). I agree with not going shorter than 22" on a .22-250, just to suit my own preferences.

I"ve got a browning abolt with 22" bbl in 22-250 and it shoots 3675fps with 55's and 3775fps with 50's and IMR-4895. Thats not to much velocity loss versus a 26" tube.

22" bbl's make nice calling rifles, or truck guns.

It would be hard to turn down a nice Kimber at a good price, but you'd probably be also reducing your resale.

Do you want a short barrel or a short rifle?

Another option might be to look at a Single Shot rifle like a Ruger, Browning, or Winchester. The action length is short and the rifles can still have a longer length barrel and still feel compact.
