.22-250 C.O.L.

I just measured the C.O.L. of my Rem. .22-250.
Using a cleaning rod and clamps with a 55gr. v-max bullet.
I came up with 2.500" - .010" = 2.490" C.O.L
The reloading books say the C.O.L. should be 2.350".
Does this sound alright ?? or is this going to be to long.

As long as the bullet will cycle thru the action and will stay in the case when fed from a magazine you should be OK. Many rifles have the COL determined by what will fit in the magazine. Also most factory chambers are cut for the longest bullet used in commercial ammo and short (lighter bullets) can't get near the rifling and still stay seated in the case.

2.490" will leave you with plenty enough bullet in the case neck. I run 50Vmax's at 2.503" to get them in the lands in my Kimber 22-250. I just looked at a 55Vmax at 2.500" and you will be good to go at that length.

Sometimes when they're stretched out to reach the lands, they (the bullet) won't fit in the box. If you don't mind shooting your rifle single shot, go for it. If you want your rifle to be a repeater, you can measure your box length and subtract a few thousands for clearance and that will be your O.A.L.

remember you need to measure from the ogive of the bullet, not the tip, if you measure from the very tip this will vary quite a bit, .010 to .015 or more, the ogive normally only varies less than .004 or a lot less in most cases. I use a stoney point bullet comparator, one of the better ways to check what your doing is take a fireformed case, stick a bullet in it, if it needs a little pressure squeeze the neck a bit with pliers to hold it, then load it, this is called the jamb method, I usually check it 5 or 6 times to make sure I am getting consistent readings. it might not work as good in a loose necked factory gun but works great in my customs
