22-250 in AR15 platform

I’ve searched the internet and can’t find it or I am not searching the right stuff so thought I’d ask here. Can you build a 22-250 in a semi auto at platform? I love the caliber for coyotes and have it in a bolt gun but would really love it in an AR platform.

Yeah you can find oly 22-250 umars on gunbroker pretty regular, even new ones I think. That's a modified ar15, and there are also builders who make 22-250 in the larger platform, I think Alex pro and Specialized dynamics. It can be a trick to get that tapered case to work right in a magazine or so I'm told, never tried it.

The UMARS were hit and miss as far as reliably feeding...at least in the beginning. The Alex Pro takes a proprietary magazine that is $180 and is only 8 rounds and the SD doesn't recommend more than 7 rounds in their magazines. Granted, 7-8 rounds should be plenty but it is nice to have a magazine that holds more so that you can cut down on the amount of spare mags you want/need to pack around.
Would like to have one though.

Armalite made them once or twice too in an AR10, they had feeding problems also after stacking more than 5 in the mag.
I am a .22-250 fan but unless fur saving was the plan, a .243 ar10 might be the best route.

IIRC, GLShooter and Ritch of Ritch Precision have that 22 NXS doing about 22-250 speed in an AR-15?? No need to go heavier weight if that's the case.

Yep the 22-NXS has been running 22-250 speeds with good accuracy and will run in AR mags with longer barrel life. It is not hard to do and really is reliable.

I just started on my 22NXS from Ritch...awhile back I started nosing around about it but thought it might be too much trouble with the brass and everything...started thinking about it again and after talking with Ritch and Greg, it wasn't any big deal running the brass thru the 22 Nosler die. Very simple process...one pass in the die and you are good to go. My initial work up to Ritch's load using 55gr bullets produced great velocities...started at 34.2gr powder, velocity was 3585...34.4gr powder, velocity was 3612...34.6gr powder, velocity was 3641. So it is hanging in there with the 22-250. Primers looked good and I have used the same 5 pieces of brass at least 5 times and primer pockets are still good. Still tweaking seating depth and going to try some 60gr bullets as well. I am not the best AR shooter, so am struggling with my groups being 2 together and one flyer...without the flyer, it would be shooting .5 to .75 easily.

Problem with the nxs imo is simply that it is only available in an 8 twist. I would guess a slower twist would help accuracy with the shorter lighter varmint bullets.
This takes me back to the 6x6.8 10 twist.

I would just go the 22 nosler Route myself. Half the price and most of the speed.

I've been very happy with the .22-250 UMAR I bought three years ago (made kills past 500 yards), but, as others have mentioned, there might be better alternatives available today--alternatives that work with standard AR lowers and don't require proprietary, $100, five-shot magazines.

Ok let me ask this then. I’m wanting something more than a 223 in a semi auto platform for faster follow up shots than a bolt action that is fur friendly. What suggestions do you all have then?

Do you reload? And what kind of weight is acceptable to you?

No I don’t currently reload but have been seriously considering it. I’d like to be under 10lbs but can handle more. Just don’t really want be carrying a 20lb rifle through the woods.

If you dont reload the choice is pretty clear imo. 22 nosler will push 55s 3500 with cfe 223 powder and factory Nosler 55 grain ballistic tip ammo is 3500 in a 22" barrel. If you want to do it on the cheap wait for the Dogtown ammo to go on sale at Midway or buy it on your birthday discount. It's right close to the 3500 mark too. It's a 55 varmageddon bullet and you can't load it for the discount price.

Factory ammo is an issue sometimes with this one.
