22-250 loads

I just bought a Savage 12bvss. I worked up some loads and got the accuracy I was looking (less than .25" @ 100 yds) for with a 55grain sierra hpbt using 40 grains of Ramshot Hunter. The only problem is is the velocity is only about 3600 fps. The gun has a 26" barrel so I elected to go with a slower burning powder and CCI 200 Primers. The manual states that 40 grains is only at 52000 psi. I didn't go beyond their max load and showed no signs of pressure. Has any one used Ramshot Powders for this case. Also I am looking for a load using 40grain sierra Blitz Kings. This is my first .22 centerfire any advise would help.

Thanks

Great Story! I often wondered if and when something like that would happen. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I don't see the problem with the velocity????

Speed isn't what kills........accuarcy is and you say your getting under 1/4" groups.....what's the problem????

I have been using 36 grains of varget and a 50 grain v-max. Shooting .2 groups at 100 yards. I have a freind that uses the ramshot powders and loves them, but they don't have much info on the powder. If you have some info or know where some is for the ramshot powder I would like to know where you got it, thanks.

If you call the guys at Ramshot (1-800-497-1007) I think the guys name is Mike, anyway they will send you a loading manual with info. They also have loading data on their web page. I like it alot, burns clean and meters great plus no numbers to confuse: 4831, 4350, 4064

I've always use 3031 for my 22-250 but recently I loaded a bunch with Varget---35gr behind a 50gr V-Max gives me a velocity average of 3685 fps out of my falling block

I have experienced excellent accuracy with Varget and H4895. Both velocities are pretty good, but accuracy is the key. 38gr. of Varget under a 40 grain V-max will scoot!, and I use 36 grains of H4895 under the 50 grain V-max. Not as fast, but more accurate.

This is merely one mans opinion, but I just paid out in excess of $400. for a new SS heavy barrel from Hart. .22-250s are not especially kind to barrels that are hotrodded.
I get my best accuracy at 3600fps with 50 and 55gr. bullets. I can't think of an animal that would know the difference between that velocity and anything faster. Speed kills yes, but it kills barrels also. Best wishes.

I know since tells me that accuracy is more than velocity, and the barrel life is important. I just wanted to bounce this in the real world and get some opinions. Thanks
