22 ARC Barrel Length

For those that have tried a 22ARC in a bolt gun. What barrel length did you go with? Is it a better choice for a 16”-18” barrel than a 22Creed and be easier on barrel life?

Considering the 22 Creed is going to use between 10-15gr more powder then the 22 ARC, yeah, I think it's pretty safe to say the 22 ARC is going to definitely be easier on barrel life, BUT, in all fairness the 22 Creed is going to shoot the same bullet a good 150-150+ fps faster then the 22 ARC so I guess you'll have to decide which is more important to you increased velocity or longer barrel life. As they say, "there's no free lunch".

No doubt that the ARC will have better barrel life. I ordered a 20" X-Caliber Carbon Fiber 22 Creed barrel (bolt action) and soon will order a 22 ARC Saturn 16" barrel (AR) . The creed build is for me and the 22 ARC is one of my granddaughters. But I have been thinking about a 22 ARC in a Howa Mini-action.

PS: Give me a couple years with both and I will give an in-depth report of each :giggle:

I went with the 16in because that was what was available, i use a can 100% of the time I me so I was ok with it. Getting 3120fps with 62gr eldvt. 22in I'm guessing put closer to 3250. Creed will allow you to reach 3500 I bet. But the 22 ARC besalides barrel life, it soft shooting and very quiet.

Really interesting debate between the 22 ARC and 22 Creed, especially when you start weighing barrel life against that extra speed. Personally, I'd probably lean toward the 22 ARC for a bit more longevity – I tend to value barrel life since I'm not chasing the absolute top-end velocity. It reminds me a bit of revolver parts kits I was tinkering with a while back. There’s always that balance between finding something durable and wanting top performance. Sometimes the simpler setup, feels right for regular, reliable use without pushing everything to the limit.

If it's mainly a coyote rifle, who cares about barrel life? Even a hot-rodded 22 Creed should go at least 1,000 rounds. Lets say you subtract 200 for load work up, zeroing, etc. How long would it take you to shoot at 800 coyotes?

IMO, if it's a bolt gun, I'm going 22 Creed in the 20-22 inch range.
If you want an AR, that's where the 22 ARC shines. I think 18-20" is a good balance between velocity and handiness.

I agree with the point of the 22creed still taking a long time to burn up a barrel just shooting at coyotes. I do like the 22ARC in that it burns less powder so could be quieter as well as more fur friendly. (We have lots of Bobcats in MO)

Personally I'd build by the action available. The ARC is just perfect for a mini action, Howa, CZ, Mini Mauser. The Creed in a short action, Rem 700 SA, Sav 10 etc. An ARC length cartridge won't do anything the Creed can't do in the same size action. If you push the ARC to try to get close to the Creed I think your barrel life argument will go down the tube. If you keep your loading reasonable and don't run long strings heating barrels badly I suspect barrel life isn't that big of an issue.

If barrel life is an issue was get a 222 Rem and get closer it will be more accurate, use less powder.

If burning up a barrel is a concern then get ready to be disappointed because any barrel (caliber) can be burned up or damage, some just takes longer than others if used on a regular basis/high volume and/or kept in harsh environments!
