I live in PA and i just started hunting coyotes. I'm going to purchase a predator gun soon and would like to know what you guys recommend. I will be hunting coyote, fox, and raccoons. Most shots will be under 100 yds. and i want minimum pelt damage. I was looking at the savage .22 hornet. Does anyone no the price of the 22 hornet?
Thanks for the help.

I'd suggest the 204 or one of the 17's. The hornet if a fine little cartridge but finicky to load at times. For loaded ammo check out Midway or Cabela's.

If you want a rifle chambered in Hornet the CZ 527's are probably the way to go.

Check out gunbroker.com. Do a search for 22hornet (you may have to register to be able to do searches, but it's free). You can get a general idea of what new in box and used rifles sell for there.

I'd second what Bob has said about the Cz 527. They make a fine rifle. I don't think Savage offers a Hornet in anything other than single shot.

I have a Ruger 77/22 in the Hornet that will drive tacks at 100yds, but for a few more bucks I believe the Cz is worth it. I think they retail for around 525.

From what I recall you'll spend around 400 for a Savage single shot.

Go with the hornet. I have been hunting with one for over 10 years. It was finicky for a time. But it was easy to figure out. It shoots way better fouled. I reload and have some great loads worked up(45GR rnhp). It has been a fine gun out to 150 yards. I have killed many coyotes with it and perfer its quite report around small farms I hunt. I bought the ruger matte stainless with the lam stock. The barrel was longer than the plain version and I think it helps with accuracy. I have a 204,222rem, 223, 22-250,22mag,243win and my trusty hornet. Guess who is usally with me? Ol horndogger!

If you reload, I would get a 221 Fireball instead of a Hornet. If you do not reload I would get a .223 or .222. I like Hornets and have had many, but as previously mentioned they are often pickey. Since I would rather hunt than spend lots of time, powder, and bullets trying to figure out the likes and dislikes of my rifle I go with calibers with an easy reputation. I have found the same philosophy is not best applied to women. Sometimes easy is best avoided.

Years ago I had two hornet rifles and it was hard working up good accurate loads for them....as a matter of fact, it was harder finding a accurate load for them than any other caliber I've tested. Just my two cents.

Last I checked Hornet factory ammo was not at all cheap. Personaly I would not like to go through many boxes looking for the one my rifle liked. A guy could go through $100 real quick and still not have accuracy like he wanted, or he might get lucky. Reloading your own would enable you to try many different loads much cheaper. IMHO I would hesitate in buying one unless I reloaded (which I do), or if $$$$$$ did not matter.

A few months ago I picked up a Savage 219 in 22H and it seems to shoot everything well, HSM 35gr V-Max load did well also.

Lil'Gun is the powder of choice in this rifle, very accurate with Win 46gr HP and is 100 fps faster than my 218 Bee.

I haven't checked the twist in this barrel but am guessing at 1-16 or slower as it will not stabilize 50gr NBTs.

I'm looking forward to early coyote hunting with this rig.

My recommendation is. If you are going with the Hornet then get one in the TC Encore. You then have the option of getting another barrel of different cal, plus with the Encore you can seat the bullet out where you get max vel from the little case. My Encore loves Lil'Gun and the Hornady 40 gr V-Max . From the 24 inch Encore barrel it is chronographing over 2900 FPS . It is getting awful close to the 222 Rem with less noise. I will say what you really need is the new 17 Fireball or the best the 17 Rem for killing yotes on the spot with very little hide damage. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I must agree with several others, the Hornet can be a pain to find a load that shoots well.

I owned a Ruger 77/22 and I won't go into the nightmares I had trying to get that rifle to shoot accuratly. The best I ever obtained was 1" at 100 yards with factory ammo.

It's a fun little caliber, but I must say it was not the most fur friendly round either. I shot the Sierra 40 & 45 grain bullets. My favorite powder was 2400.

Fifty percent of the time if I connected with bone I got nasty exit holes. I never had a runner when I connected.

I would go with the CZ first followed by the Contender in 22 Hornet.

I have a Contender G2 in 22 Hornet. It's fun to shoot.

You can load alot of ammo with a pound of powder.:)
