i did some searching and can't find the post on here like this any more.

which do you guys thinks better predator varmit round?

anyone have good likes to tests done on the ammos?

which 22 lr handgun would be great target and small game gun?

thanks Jeff

Well, its not a fair challenge to try and put a .22 LR up against a 17 HMR.... Try a .22 mag.. its a better comparison in my belief. But if you have to use .22LR I'd go with CCI's Quick Shok ammo its a fragmenting bullet, and I get very good results on samller critters... works pretty well.

ok let me restate this i guess i did not mean to put them head to head.

i am looking at buying another pistol. if i was to use it for small game and up close varmit and predator also want to have fun shooting it alot.

could i use a 22 long rifle?
22 lr is alot cheaper to shoot.

was looking at taurus 17 hmr hand gun, but 17 hmr is more than my 9mm even at walmart.

i want fun, but also want lots of accuracy. hmr seems like it would be more accurate out to 20 yrds than 22 lr.

These are two totally different rounds relative to ballistics and effect.

Just the difference in trajectories makes them uneven.

At 100yds, a .22lr high velocity 40gr bullet has a velocity of 1023 fps and a drop of 12.89 inches with a 'zero' of 59yds. And an energy factor of 93 ft lbs @ 100yds

While the .17HMR (per Hornady) has a velocity (muzzle of 2550 fps) and 'zeroed' at 145yds, would produce a rise of 0.9" @ 50yds, 0.3" low at 150yds, and 5.5" low at 200yds with a energy factor of 90 fr lbs at 165yds.

A better comparison would involve the .17Mach2 as it is based on the .22lr cartridge instead of the .22 Mag. like the .17HMR.

I just saw your follow-up post...

IMHO, a good old Ruger MK2 makes an excellent field pistol for close range work.... If you want to go a little fancier, see if you can locate a Sig-Hammerli Trailside in the 6" barrel... I have a 4" barrel Sig-H that I use in steel plate competitions and it's fast, light, and extremely accruate with a red-dot sight.

The only combo guns you will find that will accomodate the lr and mag will be the Ruger single six or a Colt single action that has long ceased production. I believe Heritage arms makes an economy single action that has two cylinders.
I would opt for the 22 mag over the 17 HMR in a handgun

Just a little factoid that a lot don't know, while the Stinger can be used in non-match 22 long rifle chambers, the 17M2 case is based on the .22 Stinger case which is .10" longer than a standard long rifle case, and why the stinger can't be used in match chambers....back to the topic. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Since the .17 HM2 is based on the .22 Long Rifle Stinger, converting most firearms to .17 HM2 requires only a barrel change. The higher pressures makes conversion of semi-automatic firearms more difficult, as virtually all are blowback designs that are sensitive to pressure changes. Kits for the Ruger 10/22 have appeared, and they replace the factory bolt or bolt handle with a heavier one to increase the bolt mass and compensate for the higher pressure. Since the .22 Long Rifle is arguably the most popular cartridge in the world, the .17 HM2 has a large pool of potential firearms that could chamber it, and a huge infrastructure to manufacture the rimfire case it is based on.

so would it be more of a fair comparison to dothe 22 mag and 17hmr

what are the balistics on the 22 mag? i would guess the 22 mag could have more knock down power at close range because of bullet weight. i understand K.E.

keep in mind that the 22mag and the 17hmr are loud... just my opinon, so if you lookin to have fun keep that in mind if it is for hunting then i would go with the 22mag the 17hmr depending on choice of ammo leaves the barrel just under 2000fps the 22mag i dont know. but i have a taurus tracker and its loud it is in 17hmr.. its goin back to taurus soon though...

that was a great article. so what he says is a 22 mag would be great up close small game and predator gun. i like the looks and feel of the taurus tracker 22mag. i want to call fox and try for bobcat up close. i have shot a fox and coyote with my bow. i think handgun hunting would be a blast. i am spicing up my ruger mark II with a red dot. i shoot small game with it now.

thanks for the onfo. always can find great info on this sight.
