.22 mag as a fox only gun?

I am considering adding a .22 mag to my collection for a predator rifle. It would be pretty much a fox only gun. I am leaning towards the mag over the HMR because of the heavier bullet options. .204 and .223 tear up fox way to much.

What is the max effective range for a clean red fox kill? 150 yards? or less?

If fox is the sole thing on the menu, hardly likely as other stuff does come to calls, then the 22 mag is the way to go.

I'd limit to 100'ish yards and rock on...

The 22 Magnum is an excellent choice for foxes. Especially if you are calling them and bringing them into 40-50 or less. Excellent choice.

Mount a low power scope with a good thick reticle that's easy to find in low light and you Jared, are in business.

Some of us don't have that problem of being over run with other predators on a stand. I wish!

I would have to think that a 22mag would be a good choice. I shot 4 red fox last year with a 223 and every one of them were messy. I finally had to go with a shoulder mount as the vital area of the hide was missing!! I killed my very first coyote with an old 22mag. 75 yard head shot. He was DRT!! Lee

I used to use a 22 hornet for fox and was really happy with it but I have recently traded my dad his scoped 22 mag for my 10/22 and I've never looked back. Fox are the most fragile animals I've ever hunted. Many times I'm out in one specific area calling for coyotes and there are fox in the area. If I don't have the hornet, 22mag, or a shotgun, I just leave 'em alone. my .223 and .243 flat out blow 'em up. The .243 is even a little hard on coyotes depending what I'm shooting and how I hit them. For a dedicated fox gun you're making an excellent choice. I've heard of hand loaders making rounds for fox for a .223 but I've never been very successful with it. I'm not the one loading either though. My dad does it and I tell him what I'm lookin' to do, and so far big holes only. Avoid the hassle and sick with what you're getting.

Foxes, coons and ground hogs you can't ask for a better round. I live in DE and we can only use rifle's for small game and varmints. A 40 grain jhp will knock the snot out of them out to 125 yrds.

One of the guys I hunt with shot a .22 mag for years and pounded fox hard with it out to 100-125yrds. He's even shot the odd Coyote with it under 100yrds. He's recent switched to a .17HMR though and says that he likes it better because of the acurracy of it. It doesnt kill any better just puts them where he wants it more often.

Good huntin'
Tim
