.22 revolver in PA question

i am thinking of running a trapline here soon and i have a .22 revolver i could use, but i am only 18. A guy told me i could get a permit from the sherriff to carry it for trapping at 18, instead of having to be 21. is there any truth to this?

Be very careful what you do here.
If you are issued a permit with any kind of restrictions on it they may be difficult to get removed when you are of age for a concealed carry permit.
Some states have these type of restrictions.
Go to www.packing.org and check out PA laws then get legal advice from a lawyer who has experience with gun laws, even if it costs you money.
DO NOT get advice from a police officer or game warden.
Do it right, do it smart, avoid possible future hassles.
Learn the law, obey the law.
In the mean time carry a long gun.
I hope for you that PA doesn't have these type of restrictions.
Good luck.

Justin,

Yes the permit is easy to obtain. When I was younger I had one for running my trap line. You get them at the county courthouse. At the time I think it was 6 bucks for 3 years or something like that. Just remeber you can not conceal it at all. Not in the car, not under your coat. I was also told that the pistol and ammo needed to be seperat while driving, so if the pistol was stitting on the passanger seat I would keep the ammo in a box in the back seat. I don't know if that is what they meant, but that is what I did. At one time I had one for both Cambria and Centre county. Check with your court house and they should be able to assist you.

I got this from packing.org
You might be able to carry a handgun with this permit while trapping.
Notice it says " while engaged in that activity........"
BE CAREFUL, don't take my word for it.
I am not an expert and just got this from the internet.
Read the actual laws yourself.
Here it is:

Special Sports Permit for Hunting or Fishing From County Treasurer's Offices--
A sportsman's firearms PERMIT allows one who holds a fishing, hunting, trapping, or dog-training license to carry a handgun while engaged in that activity, or moving to and from that activity (but not loaded in a motor vehicle). To obtain one, apply to the county Treasurer (not Sheriff) and bring your hunting or fishing etc. license. The cost is $6 for 5 years. The permit is issued IMMEDIATELY and WITHOUT any application process (other than to list one's name and address and description). One need not be a resident of Pennsylvania to have a permit, but must have a Pennsylvania license for fishing, hunting, trapping, dog training. The Sportsman's permit is a good option for those who only want to have a handgun while hunting or fishing. It's very easy to obtain, at a reasonable cost, and it's issued immediately.

Good luck.

WCO's in Pa are very easy to talk to and helpful. You wont find one that isnt willing to give advise and clarification on regulations, just like any other Law Inforcement agency.

broknaero,
I wasn't trying to criticize LEO's.They have always been very helpful to me with firearms questions. I just didn't want Justin M to get into a bureaucratic hole buy applying for a carry permit with restrictions on it. Getting restrictions removed from a permit might be more difficult than getting an unrestricted permit in the first place. I thought a precise opinion from a lawyer or even states attorney would be wise. No offense intended.PC

catman823,thats the first time i heard that anyone had to apply for a permit for each individual county. When any issueing agent in any county issues you a handgun hunting permit it is good throughout the commonwealth of Pa.You can check but far as i know it's always been that way.

Yote_tote,

It was not that I had to get it in both counties. I was told by some other folks that Centre county was run by a funny bunch. When I moved there I didn't want to get in a Jam. So I went to the court house and picked a permit. I figured it was better to be safe than sorry. I quickly found out that Centre county was a different ball game when it came to restriction and law enforcement. In my opinion this was do to a bunch of regular people who thought they were "better" do to living close to state college. Just my opinion however.
