.22 rimfire 10Gauge or .50 cal muzzleloader?

I've got the coyote hunting bug this year after some good luck on my parents small property. I used to have a lot of land to hunt but since I have been out of the game for a while its a little late this year to find new places. Illinois has thousands of acres public hunting but they do not allow centerfire riffles. I now own a .50 cal muzzleloader and A single shot ten-gauge. I know the muzzleloader will do the trick but I don't like the idea of having to shoot it to clear the barrel everytime after a dead stand. 10 gauge does just fine except its hard to find shells for and is a little short on range. I am looking at a .22 mag....any suggestions? I know ya have to hit a coyote pretty square with my 22-250 to drop it and I wonder about the knockdown power of the little .22. And is there anything else that would qualify as rimfire .22 cal or less that would do a better job? What would you guys take?

Joey, Actually the 10ga, 22-250 and the 22 mag are all calibers that I use in my varmint hunting. Of course my 22-250 is the hands down favorite of the bunch since it knocks them a_ _ over tea kettle, but both the 10 ga and 22 mag have a definite place and use. I like to use the 10 ga out to about 50 yrds for nite using heavy shot and the 22 mag out to around 80 yrds but shot placement with the 22 mag needs to be right on when shooting at that distance, the 50 yds and under shots the 22 mag works fairly well. I will admit that we have had to followup a quite a few using the 22 mag when the shot placement was a little off and have lost a few also /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif, so I have not used it as much anymore.

Geeze Joey I'm glad I'm out here in Idaho. Check out the CZ 452 in 22 mag, there very accurate and reasonably priced. Here's where to look at them.

Here's where to buy some dandy accessories and reading the FAQ's near the bottom of the page will give you an idea how great these little rifles are.

Here's a place where you can compare prices on the 452's both new and used.

I don't know what kind of muzzle loader you use, but could you just remove the cap to move from stand to stand and you can use one of the compressed air units to remove the charge from it.

Out here in the West we use mostly centerfire rifles for coyote hunting so can't help you any more than that. If you go a 22 mag just keep your shot close and aim small.

Thanks guys I think I might use this as an excuse to buy another gun. .22 mag would be cheaper than the 250 for practice too. And I should clear up what I said before...Illinois does allow centerfire riffles just not on public land.
