I have a Ruger 22 mag. A few weeks ago i happend apon a fox while predator hunting and went to shoot and it misfired once, the next round fired fine, i just figured it was the bullets.

Me and Nate and Tyler were hunting last night and long behold a fox came into Nates Foxpro. It was 80 yrds to our right and tyler and nate both had shotguns. I was the shooter. We squeeked, it stopped I...CLICK reload CLICK! My gun misfired again 2-3 times ( i cant remember the number but we found 2 unfired shells) I was so mad.

My question is what could be casuing this? I asked around in school 2day and people said the combo of the cold (below freezing) and the crud build-up in my gun around the firing pin.

I just thoroughly cleaned it 2night, so im gonna try shooting it 2moorw.
Any help oppreciated!
thanks carl

Probley just dirty, watery oil in the action that when below freezing gums up enough for the firing pin to lose strength. Had a Marlin 22mag do the same thing. Take apart the action and clean that junk out and it should be fine.

Can you see a good dent from the firing pin. I bought some remington 22lr bullets that misfire often. They would have a deep dent in the rim like all the others that fired but they were just duds. I stick with the federals now and have had no problems.

I had that same trouble, it was a weak spring. Then had that problem with another rifle, turned out it was the ammo, CCI, switched to Rem or Federals and never had another problem.

mines a Ruger 10/22 rifle. I could see where the firing pin hit the shell and it looked just as good as any bullet that would have fired so i dont know, it could have been the bullets. Im shooting the silver box Winchesters 40 grain hollow points.
thanks

Go to www.rimfirecentral.com and there is a lot of info on the 10/22 magnum.
The people there can help you troubleshoot your problems.
Two things I learned in dealing with my own 10/22s and 10/22 mags, and both came from rimfirecentral.
The first was how to disassemble and reassemble my rifle and give it a very good cleaning.
Next thing I learned was oil is not the lube to use with these guns. You need a teflon type spray lube.
The oil will gum up the bolt and firing pin and you will get misfires. Your magazines also will respond well to the same type cleaning and dry lube. It can also contribute to misfires as well.
These are not that bad to work on, and are sweet little rifles when they are right.
Good luck with yours.

This is why they discontinued that rifle. It was having all kinds of problems they did not want to address! The only problems I have with mine is extraction of the case from the chamber. However, it is one of the most accurate .22 mags I have ever shot and this was with the plain barrel. I have switch it out with a Butler Creek stock and heavy fluted barrel now. It shoots even better.

You might take the firing pin spring out and stretch it a bit. Or, buy a extra power one from Wolfe Springs.

If your gun has the extra extractor toss it. The second extractor sometimes pushes the round too low, and the pointy factory firing pin just nicks the top of the case.

Also, get a Valquartson "exact edge" extractor, and you will be alot better off. I sent mine back to Ruger, and they also fluted the chamber like an H+K. Jam-free and very accurate now.

Once you get 'em running good the Ruger 10/22 Mag is lots of fun. But they can be a pain to work out the kinks. Stick with it!

made a slight error in my detail, its a model 77/22 Ruger 22 mag. But the important part is is after i cleaned it real good and soaked the bolt in mineral spirits it seems to be working just fine.
thanks everyone
