.220 swift

I have an AR that I LOVE, but now I want a tack driving bolt gun...... Can anybody tell me why I shouldn't go with a .220 swift? I load my own so ammo isn't the biggest of concerns but if there is a flatter shooting, more accurate round in. 224 out to 300a yards I'm all ears.

It is what I want but will be more difficult to find and probably more expensive. I also don't know how real the benefit is over a 22-250 in hunting situations.

Well the .22-250 will probably be cheaper to reload, and easier to find.

Both can be loaded to +/- 4,000 FPS.
Both can realistically shoot 50-60 grain bullets as accurate as the other.
And most important, in a hunting situation, both equal dead critters.

If you want a .220 Swift, don't let the .22-250 stop ya. Just think about your options and go after whichever fits you best.

I too wanted a Swift last year. They're difficult to find as not many manufacturers chamber rifles in that cartridge. My choice was a Rem 700 VSF II which is a great rifle.

Settled on a .22-250 which I got cheaper. The .22-250 is a good cartridge too, but I regret my decision.

Reality is the Swift will move a bullet 200 fps faster and that is a difference hard to overlook in varmint hunting.

I bought my first Swift over 35 years ago. Even back then people would say "Why don't you just get a 22-250? It is almost as good as the .220 Swift. "Almost" is the key word here. I wanted The King of varmint calibers and that is what I got.

Don't have that old Ruger M77V anymore and I miss it. But the Krieger barrelled Rem 700 that I have been shooting now for several years is still doing a fine job keeping that s#it eating grin on my face whenever I fire it.

So if you want it, get it. You will not be sorry that you opted for The King!

Only complaint with the 220 Swift is brass sometimes hard to come by in my area. It is slightly more expensive than the 22-250 brass, but not by much.

I think its a pretty cool caliber though!

A big plus 1 here!

I have owned both and 2 Swifts (one is the Ackley improved version) are still in my stable but no 22-250's. The Swift will do everything a 250 will do plus about 200fps per any given bullet weight. This is a velocity using a 30 grain Berger out of the AI model. Pretty neat what happens to pidgeons off the barn roof....... The cat goes hungry

Wow! That is a screaming fast bullet!

I have never seen a coyote or prairie dog get hit with something moving that fast. Yikes!!!

Unfortunatley it was not a very accurate load. Right about an inch @ 100 yards. The light bullet loses velocity quickly also. The drama on shots @ 100 and under is a definate wow factor. I don't shoot this load very often as there is 50 grains of powder behind that little pill and I can guarantee it is tough on the barrel.

Most impressive speeds there, Featherbomb! 300 fps more than I got with that same bullet with my 24" barrelled Swift. The one that I have now has a 28" barrel on it and might be able to get a bit closer to those speeds that you have there.

And certainly, I would think that this load would not be kind to a barrel!

My rig has a 28" shilen 14 twist tube on it. Viht-N540 was the powder. Don't forget this is the AI version and not the standard case...............

This gun crank has had more 22-250s than 220 Swifts. I like 220 Swift better than the 22-250. I find the 220s most accurate loads near or at max loading , unlike the 22-250. I would say that when you compare 22-250 most accurate loads to the 220 most accurate loads , the 220 Swift will be 400 fps faster.
Take this info for what its worth , it is just my personal experience. If you are not a reloader , go with a 22-250.

I have to say that I really like the 220 Swift. I like the 22-250 as well but the Swift gets to ride more often expecially if I am hunting Coyotes. I have 3 of them and 2 22-250's. I agree with jbelow. 220 swift has proven more accurate at max loads.

Plus I just feel cool when I wheel that thing out of the truck!
