Ok guys and gals why has the 220 swift lost the popularity beside the cost of the ammo is there anything else i have heard that the throat life sucks but other than that is there anything else.

I dont think they have lost any popularity, however there are not quite so many who use them as compared to say a 223 or 22-250, many people love them and have for years. In my book a 220 swift is kind of like a corvette, not everyone has one, but those that do love em. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Other than not needing a caliber for long range, there is no other .22 centerfire in my book. Swift rocks! Not worried about the cost of ammo as I reload. As for the barrel life, have not experience this. No worse than anything else that can perform with it and better than a WSSM. Don't get it so hot you can fry eggs on it and keep it cleaned.

You pretty much nailed the disadvantages, only left out that semi-rimmed is not an accuracy improver, and doesn't feed as well as a modern caliber. Also it is a case stretcher extroidinare.

I have a .220 Swift it's a Remington VSSF and a dedicated Rock chuck rifle with a Leupold 8 X 25 on it. It gets very low rounds. It is never over heated like a PD rifle. We shoot Chucks free hand. Our last trip was near Jarbidge, NV. My longest freehand shot was in Rattlesnake cannon laser said 364 yards.

When the barrel goes away it will be rebuilt as a .220 Wilson Arrow. The same case and velocity as the .220 Swift but with an improved shoulder to improve case life.

Oh yes there are Rattlesnakes in the cannon LOL but it wasn’t funny at the moment.

My next gun will either be a 220 swift or the big 6mm HA!HA! when comparing the two wich would you guys have?????

yotedog, Been shooting a 220 swift on/off for years. Always seem to come back to it in one form or another just fills the void. Right now it's TC encore. On the other hand I also have 700 BDL 6mm which is a main stay cartridge in my collection of firearms. In my opinion 220 swift rock just can't be with out one. But on financial note 6mm is a more versatile cartridge Nosler make a lagrge selection of bullets for it as well.

When you say Swift, you've said it all. I have two. One is a heavy S/S barrel with a 6-24 scope. It was my first and has been a good one. I carried it on the only two PD shoots I have been on. When the guns we had would not reach that far away Praire dog, we would unleash the Swift. It accounts for my farthest one shot hit on a coyote. 597 yards. It has an estimated 1500 rounds through it and viewed under a borescope, the first 1/4 inch of riflings is washed out. I got tired of lugging that heavy thing around for coyotes and last year picked up a Swift in Rem 700 Classic. I hope to never be without a Swift.

Will it burn out a barrel. Yes, but no more so than any other cartridge sending that much powder down that small of hole. Will it out shoot any other factory produced cartridge? Yes. It can be downloaded and save some barrel life, but why? The purpose from its inception was for speed.

220 swift...........is there any other gun out there???? i have had three ...none were ever shot out.i presently have a remington stainless fluted. it has and is capable of shooting .054 of an inch groups at 100. i have had it since 94 and it has fired roughly 6000 round... i reload and i keep track. this rifle has ended many a yotes life and is now my ol reliable. now....if you reload you will need to trim your bass as it will stretch just like all calibers. when you load your rifle, just place your round in the rifle and slide it to the back of the magazine well, now place the next in and slide it back ...making sure the rim of the rounds are stacked forward allowing a more smooth operation while loading. you will be a swift lover................

I have several and have kept them all. I love the Swift and will argue it against any caliber in it's class. I wouldn't have one if I didn't reload though, have you seen what they want for a box of that stuff..!!!

The problem I have Swift516 is have you seen the way that factory stuff shoots for the money! They need to do some serious load development for that price.

My friend had a 220 Swift built about 10 years ago using a SS Hart barrel. He was able to put 10 shots in one large hole at 100 yds last fall. Tells me he broke the gun in on a PD town being careful not to overheat the barrel.

He can reload his cases at least 4 times without triming. None of the rumors I've heard about this caliber seems to be true when carefully observing my buddies gun. I've never seen a feed problem with the brass as well.

My next gun will be a Swift! His coyotes are more impressed than mine are with my 6mmAI using 58 gr Vmax bullets at 4,000 fps. I'm truely impressed with the Swift.
