223 12 twist bullet suggestion

I know that the 55gr V-MAX bullets shoot well in 12 twist rifles but I'm looking for more ballistic coefficient for longer range shots at prairie dogs

I have a 24" 700VSSF and would like to stretch it out just a bit distance wise...

Ideas? Suggestions?

Try the 53gr Vmax...it has the best BC in that weight range. Be sure your barrel is in fact a 12 twist...that seems to be the minimum twist for the 53gr vmax for it to stabilize. The design of the 53gr is different than the 50 or 55gr vmaxes and therefore needs a little faster twist than you would normally think.

I have the same rifle, with the exception the barrel is 26".

My load data:
55gr Sierra BK
REM 7 1/2 primers
Varget powder

It also likes:
50gr Nosler BT
REM 7 1/2 primers
Benchmark powder

I'd never even heard of the 53gr V-MAX until now. Yes... a 2.9BC rather than a 2.55BC from the 55gr V-MAX. I'll give some a try.

Well... I guess I made a mistake. Your post made me go back and actually measure mine it's a 26" as well. It's the old version with the HS Precision stock. I just picked it up and it's like new and it shoots lights out. The old man that had it before me shot a couple of benchrest competitions with it and put it in the gun safe almost 20 years ago. I got lucky....

Yeah, those 50 grain Dogtowns are a good deal for sure. They do a good job. Especially for the money. As a matter of fact, unless the range is a good bit past 500 yards the 50 grain bullet works well in the .223 for prairie dogs. I was using the 50 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips to whack 700 yard prairie dogs a few years ago. It sure was a most perfect Wyoming day for shooting and the bullets did their job.

I have the same rifle and tried half a dozen bullets but the Hornady 53gr V-Max with a max load of V-133 it groups .77 inches at 200 yards. Yes 200 yards.
I'm running a Leupold 3i. 4.5x14 40mm CDS scope.
