.223 62 gr Barnes TTSX VOR-TX

I have some 55gr TSX loads for coyotes, but haven't used them, yet. Would the 62gr. TTSX be a better round for them?

Would be shooting from a 20" barrel.

Thanks.

I meant to mention, this was my first post. I've been reading on here and have learned a lot, so joined not long ago. Great info, here!

I have loaded the 55's, 62's and the 70's

The 55's have more of a blunt/tangent style frontal section, and don't have near the jump to the lands.

I tried pretty hard to get the 62's and the 70's to shoot, with no luck. It is important to note that this effort was in NATO chambered AR's that are very different than a 223 REM chamber.

The 55's are not finicky to tune at all.

I also fooled with the 55 grain Nosler E-Tips. No luck getting them to shoot in NATO chambers either. They do however, shoot great out of my short throated Wylde chamber with Benchmark powder.

If it where me, i would not choose the 62's or heavier for Coyotes. They are tough bullets, that will leave the barrel with a slower velocity.

(this is all theory though, as i have never taken a Coyote with either)

I use Sierra HPBT #1390, Hornady 55gr and 60gr Vmax and 55 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips for Coyotes.

Interesting, thanks. It's possible that I would also be shooting them at some point, from a 16" and 20" NATO chambered barrel.

Can either of you elaborate more on this? Why? Is it because they don’t perform well? Or, is the expense for a bullet just for coyotes?

I also have a number of soft points, from 55-69 grains that I would assume those would probably be plenty sufficient?

Haven’t shot a coyote, yet. Am really looking forward to the adventure.

Lead Free bullets are much longer than lead bullets are so it takes a much faster twist barrel to shoot the Lead Free 50 gr and heavier 22 cal bullets.

If you have to shoot Lead Free bullets at coyotes the 35 gr to 50 gr varmint bullets that are not solid big game type bullets will work better in most rifles that are not 1-10" twist or faster.

The Barnes reloading manual and on the bullet boxes have warning labels that say 1-12" or faster on the 50 gr TSX, 1-9" and faster on the 62 gr TTSX and 1-8" and faster on the 70 gr TSX.

Barnes TSX and TTSX have a lengthy history of spotty availability.

For mono copper bullets, Hammer bullets are my choice. They cost about the same as Barnes, are exceptionally easy to load for, have sizzling accuracy, and are always in stock. 52gr HH are $89/100 shipped with mil/le discount.

I've been using the 45gr Barnes XLC, out of my Ruger 22 Hornet at 2,950+fps, for many, many years.

The Barnes hit harder than any other bullet I've tried in the Hornet, and I've tried a lot, so fewer runners and floppers.

When I up the velocity, like from my Sako L461 in 222RemMag, 'regular' bullets perform just fine.

Don't hesitate to try the 45gr TSX. Very good coyote medicine!
