.223 AI Build question

Have built many AI rifles in the past but most have been with DBM and now looking to use a BDL. The 700 barreled action is going into an HS Precision Stock inlet for BDL and I plan to use the Rem 700 BDL floor plate. Now finally to my question! I have the .223 length magazine/follower that goes between the BDL and the bottom of the action. The question is “will I need to modify the box in order for it to fit to fit?” Currently it looks as though the action screws will be too short?

223 AI's do not feed worth a darn in the BDL without mods to your feed rails, so you will have a single shot without alterations. I went 22/204 for this very reason.

My 223AI was built from my Rem 700 LTR 223 and they come with a HS Prec stock and standard BDL bottom metal.

When I had the new Hart barrel hung and chambered in 223AI I used the original BDL setup the gun came with and never had any feeding issues with it at all. I've since switched the bottom metal over to a HS Prec det mag system and it too feeds well.

My experience too

"My 22-250AI doesn't feed worth a flip. I shoot is single shot most of the time."

Bill, I have never had trouble out of my Remingtons unless the follower spring is out of the correct position.

Keith- it feeds but just stumbles once in a while. I usually shoot it as a single shot so its not a problem.

I have two 223 AI rifles, a Tikka T-3 Lite and a Rem 700. The Tikka with a detachable magazine didn't have any 223 AI feeding problems, my Rem 700 that holds the shells staggered did have feeding problems.

After installing the detachable magazine drop in kit in my Rem 700, 90 % of he feeding problems went away. Having the shell in the center of the magazine lined up with the chamber seems to help the 223 AI rounds feed better.

For shooting ground squirrels it was well worth it for me to get the 10 round detachable magazine for my 223 AI Rem 700.

Tikka's in 223 AI seem to have zero problems feeding. Thinning the feed rails on the 700's where the round pops up sooner works well.

Just run it with a DBM instead of BDL and use the Accurate Mags, problem solved and you have the choice of 5rd or 10rd mags. You can dremel out the front of the polymer mag body and gain some extra COAL too. This is my 223AI running the Berger Fullbore 80.5's at ~2.8". Crazy fun, only run it out to 800yds so far and it was silly accurate. (middle picture is a comparison of my loaded rounds next to 55fmj ball ammo along with a pulled 55gn vs 80.5gn.)

I had no feeding issues with multiples in the 6/250 AI, 243 AI, and 22/250 AI. The 223 AI is the only one that has given me fits.

I have been tweeking out the loads on a 22/204, and there are zero feeding problems as you can well imagine.

Huckleberry has the fix!
