I was wondering about on average what does a person expect to lose/gain in FPS per inch of barrel length in a 223?? Looking at getting a 223 bolt gun and found many options in barrel lenght for the model I'm looking at. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Matt

+1... The gain/lose is not completely linear; when you get real short gain per inch is great v/s low when you get real long. With typical bolt action length... you can assume 50fps gain per every 2 inches.

Different powders will finish burning at different places, but even when they are done, there is a hellova lot of high pressure gas still behind the bullet and so it keeps on going faster and faster.
