.223 fps

I am getting around 2800fps from my chronograph with Hornady Vmax 55 grain bullet, Aliant RL15 powder at 25.5 grains and so many people are saying they are getting well over 3000. I have tried bumping up to 26.5 gr powder and it increased about 100fps. Is it the powder I am using? I am not chasing speed as my gun is shooting good now but how is everyone else getting the high numbers?

Tell us more about your particular rifle. barrel length etc.

There are also probably better choices for that weight bullet than what you are using.

my stevens mdl-200 223, 22"barrel
55gr v-max & wsrp
23.5gr h335,produces for me,a mv of 2884fps and 5 shots under a dime,I have read that their is a mv difference of around 50fps per inch, maybe someone else could verify that, the hornady manual says it should be around 3100fps out of a 26"barrel,hence,mine is a 22" barrel

It depends a lot on your barrel/length/chamber, etc. With RL-15, it is better suited for the heavier bullets in .223. For the 55 gr VMAX, you would be better suited using TAC, 335, Benchmark, X-Terminator.

With that said, I'm running 25 gr. of Benchmark out of both my Bushmaster Varminter and my Remington 700 .223 using a CCI 400 and a 55gr VMAX. Both are giving me around 3240 fps and accuracy is excellent. This is my go to load for prairie dogs.

Benchmark worked for me with the 55 gr. Sierra HP's. I don't remember the exact velocity, but it was over 3000 in a 20" barreled AR.
I think I shot 24.5 grains.

I am using a 20" barrel 1 x 9 It is grouping nice now so I don't know if I should worry about the speed. What is 200fps faster going to do?

While I do agree that accuracy is your main goal the big advantage reloaders have is being able to work up and develop loads that are accurate with the bullets that we choose going the speed that we choose within the limits of safety of your gun of course.
I have a 20 inch 1/9 twist barrel and I chronographed some 53gr VMax this weekend and they were bumping 3400fps. I would think that 3200fps is reasonble to expect so a 400fps possible gain IMO is at least worth giving it try to see how accurate it is.

I get right around 3000 fps with my 20" AR-15 using 55 grain game kings and varget. no pressure signs at the load i'm using, but it shoots such good groups i see no reason to mess with it.

I agree, but velocity gain is only for terminal bullet performance, or trajectory gain. If you are mostley in the thick stuff at short range, then accuracy with lower velocity is a good thing[fur friendly]. If in open country with a possible long or longer shot, the velocity increase is worth the effort[flatter trajectory]. 24 inch 1-9 twist 55gr. v-max = 3150fps with IMR-4895 sub .5 inch @ 100yds. Works well all around for me.

If you are willing to invest in a variety of powders and bullet styles/weights, a .223 can be pumped up pretty respectably... Just be aware that shooting 'hot' loads will shorten your brass life considerably and burn out the throat of the barrel much quicker...

I prefer to shoot moderate loads that are very accurate, over high speed rounds that can be developed...IMHO, consistency in performance is much more desirable, as I can usually 'drop' those rounds in pretty much the same spot at longer distances....

I shoot 30 gr Bergers out of my mod 700 .223 and have gotten 3950+ fps with 29 gr. of AA 2230 powder and Rem 7 1/2 primers. Whacks them coyotes dead and good for fur.

Shot a bobcat at 35 yds quartering toward me. hit between the neck and front of shoulder. No exit, had a hard time finding the entrance wound.

Mousedipper, Thanks for posting the info on 30gr... I tried some 35gr V-Max, but didn't see much advantage over the 40s and stopped there... What is the twist rate on the barrel you are using..??
