Going coyote/pig hunting next weekend uncle has ranch with big pig problem. Main focus will be coyotes but when the pigs show up I was wondering if the 55 grain v-max bullets will do the job I also have a bunch of 60 grain TAP rounds? Will be using a M4 so plenty of 30 round mags.

Thanks

I have been killing pigs in my area and down south texas way using ballistic tips in my 243wssm and they have worked very well. I killed some in South Texas using a 223 with full metal jackets. I think you can do well with your loads. Pigs are just like anything else; it's all in bullet placement. Good luck on your hunt from one fello Texan to another.

They will work, but pigs are bad about not leaving good blood trails especially with small calibers. The fat layer on most hogs tends to seal up the wound.

On a big boar I would go with a head shot if possible. I've had them run and leave little blood with a .270. But, then again, I have killed a bunch with a .22 mag too.

the .223 will work, even w/ a bullet as lightly constructed as a v-max, but i would recommend head shots at all pigs. i once shot a very small (30#) in the shoulder w/ my 22-250 and 55 gr ballistic tips, and it ran off, not far, but it still ran off. i would recommend if they are broad side, between the eye and ear, that will usually hit the brain.

Hit them in the ear, or close to it and they'll drop everytime. I've been shooting them with an AR-15 for years.
Regular soft points of any cheap brand will work just fine.

When the hog is broadside, place your bullet about an inch behind the eye and up towards the ear about an inch or so. Their brains are not very big and if you hit them just right they will drop like a rock....DRT.

I agree with what Fosteology said about a .223 and shot placement. Hogs have a large gristle plate over and around their shoulders. I wouldn't try to put a ballistic tip from a .223 through one of those!

I shot this pig, the largest of my trip last year, with a .223 with FOsteology's 'behind the ear' shot placement.
