223 vs 5.56 cases

Is there a difference between 223 brass and 5.56 brass or military brass. I was told if you load the same charge in both cases the 5.56 will have a higher pressure. . Half the cases are stamped L C 12 and the other half are stamped PPU 12 5.56x45. I have deprimed, cleaned & decrimped the primer holes on these.
The reloads are NOT being used in an AR. They are shot in a high quality 223 bolt rifle. I don't believe I can use them in the 223.
thanks for any info

No CatShooter here, but as long as your rifle is chambered for 5.56 you should be fine. If your shooting for small groups you should separate and match brass anyway. And as I understand it the 5.56 case has slightly more volume than the .223 case. The Cat will elaborate further im sure.

Has it been two weeks yet?

There is no difference in .223 or 5.56 cases. Don't believe, weigh them, fill them with water. Some slight difference in lot to lot or case to case, but basically all the same.

They are all loaded to the same pressures as well. The machines that the military uses to judge pressure are different from what SAMMI uses. If you have a tire and you use two gages to check the pressure, one says 50 pounds, and the other says 60 pounds, the pressure in the tire is the same. Same with the old wives tale about the 50,000cup-60,000cup in the .223-5.56.

How many times do we have to beat this dead horse?

If they were not interchangeable, then the 5.56 cases would have to be altered to work in a .223 Rem. Think about it.

The lawyers would be all over this, if it were true.... "5.56 is not safe in a .223 Rem"

Hey Wicka, welcome to PM.

Please excuse some of us, it's just that this issue has been asked about every two weeks, since Al Gore invented the interweb.

These guys are giving you good info.

Take it easy on the newbie guys, everyone needs to learn. Glad he's asking and not just scoopin powder into cases and hammering bullets in behind it.

thanks, I tried to search a link but apparently didn't word it correctly, figured it had been discussed at some time but couldn't find it. I shoot a Cooper 223 and have been told not to use the 5.56 brass. Will stick with the quality stuff and get rid of the crimped brass to someone who shoots a 5.56

Partner, you do what you want, it's your gun.

But I can't figure any reason in the world why you can use 5.56 brass in every other 223 rifle made, but not in a Cooper.

Maybe some of the gents here who shoot Coopers will come along and learn me something tonight.

The QUALITY stuff is the LC (lake city) stuff! The crimp is no trouble, deprime then give the pocket one turn with your deburing tool.

Your cooper won't be able to tell the difference. 95% of the brass I have shot in my AR and bolt guns is all lake city brass. Shoot it and enjoy.

Hey Kid... there is NO difference between 223 and 5.56. They are the same case!!! I shoot Lake City brass in my custom 223 match rifle... it is the same case!!

It will NOT hurt your rifle!!

Those that say so, are repeating old wives tales that have been draggin' around for 50 years, and have no idea what they are talking about.

The Lake City cases weigh ~90 grains. Commercial cases (Remington, Winchester, Peters, Hornady, etc) weigh ~90 grains.

PMC and very OLD Lapua weigh ~100 grains - current Lapua weighs ~90 grains.

In quality, Lapua is best, Lake City is second best, Then Winchester, Remington... and the rest are okie dokie.

If you don't want to shoot your Lake City, send it to me, and I will gladly shoot it in my custom 223 match egg rifle.
