do any of you know much about the .223 wssm or have one yourself? would it be better than a regular .223? any info would be appreciated.

I have a Browning in 223 wssm. It shoots very well with handloads with 55 grain and 60 grain bullets. I've killed 17 dogs with it. All hit in center of mass have been bang-flops.

Can't really say it kills them any better than my friends' 223 or 222.

t bone,

what kind of velocity does it have compared to the .223 and does it do any more damage to the pelts? is it more closely related to the .243 winchester in ballastics and velocity than a .223, and what kind of range does it have over a regular .223. what is the upside and the downside to the caliber over a .223.

The .223 WSSM is nothing like the .223 Rem or 222. It's more like a .220 Swift on steroids. It has about double the powder capacity of a .223 Rem.

Even though it has tremendous velocity I think a guy would be far better to step up to a larger bore than to push a .224 so fast. It's bigger brother the .243 WSSM has some pretty impressive balistics.

I have a Winchester 70 in 223 WSSM & I love it. While I wish I had spent the extra $ to get a browning, the caliber is great. Once I got it broke in it'll shoot as good as anything else I have.

My son owns one. It is fast. Factory 55gr Winchester Silvertips averaged 3900fps. He has the Winchester Shadow version and a Zeiss Conquest on it. So far, it is the absolute worst shooting gun I have ever fired. Vertical stringing of over 2 feet, with 4 powders, 2 bullets and the factory stuff, so I suspect a scope problem. He is having it bedded now, and when done, we will try again.

Welcome to the board!

I own std and wildcat .223 WSSM versions and find them not to be anything over std calibers such as the .220 Swift or .22-250. Both of these are far more accurate. As far as the .223, it is not even in the same class as a .223 WSSM. If you are looking to get a WSSM, I would recommend the .243 version as it offers more for the buck. It is more accurate than the .223 WSSM and provides double duty as a hunting rifle as well.

K-22hornet. , Do you get sooty cases with your handloads? With the vertical stringing that you have talked about it makes me think that the necks may not be sealing. I have had problems with that on all of the WSSM line as the case necks are about twice the thickness of standard brass.

The only thing I could find that would solve the problem was annealing the case necks. Poof! the problem was solved. I didn't ever have the groups that you are talking about but I was shooting over a chronograph and was getting standard deviations on a five shot string as high as 200 fps! After the annealing the SD dropped, in many cases, into the single digit.
