Need some info on the .223,such as what bullet weights you use for coyotes, and what powders you use when you reload for it?The rifles used,Ruger mk2 bolt action, and a NEF handi rifle.Range would be 0 to 200 yds.Is varget a suitable powder?I have been reloading several other calibers, for sometime, but know very little about the .223.I would like to use Hodgdon powder if possible,as this is what I have on hand, and it works well in my other rounds.Thank-you for the input.

I'm a veritable rookie at coyotes, but I can say that Varget is an outstanding choice of 223 powder in my experience. I've used it with bullet weights from 40 gr to 55 gr, with outstanding results.

I use Varget. Benchmark and W748 with 50g to 63 g bullets,
All work well in my .223's. A stevens 200 and H&R Handi in .223 SB2 Ultra.

My Savage 112 has never shot better than it has with 26 grains of Varget and the 50 grain Vmax or Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet. It has been THE load of choice on my last two praire dog hunts. I have shot 5 shot groups with the load at 100 yards (WW cases and CCI BR primers) that you couldnt push a pencil through without tearing the paper. One of them is on display at Cliff's Safes in Boise Idaho. He wanted to be able to show customers just how good an off the wall Savage could shoot.

Oh, and my AR-15 likes this load as well. And that reminds me, I need another 8lb keg of Varget- I am running low- again!

Best fur round for a 223 i have found in many years is as follows , speer 52 gr. H.P.( this bullet has a big opening in the h.p. end) with 26 gr. h-335 winchester small rifle primers , you will see m.o.a. or sub with this load out of a 16 or 20 a.r. or almost any bolt gun . oal =2200 ocl= 1760 dont use v max or ballistic tips on coyotes youll be sorry .

I havent been able to put it to the fur test yet (I assume it will do fine though), but i'm clover leafing all my rounds at 100 yards with 24.5gr. oh H335 and 55gr. sierra spitzers. Thats in my AR with a 1/8 twist. good luck!

hello..varget is a great powder..my 223 like's 26.0 grain's & a 55 grain sierra s.p. shoot great group's..26.5 of w-748 with the same bullet shoot's very well also..i have became fond of hodgdon's benchmark lately..a 55 grain nosler & 23.1 of benchmark shoot's wonderful..i haven't shot a coyote with that bullet yet..so i can't comment on killing performance..dogcaller load some up & go for it !!

I like both w748 and H335 with 55 and 60 grain Vmaxes.

In my 1in9 savage it likes 25.5 grains of H335 and the 55 grain Vmax.

My AR really likes anything that I feed it but has really liked the 53 grain hp's, 24.2 grains W748 and also likes the 60 grain Vmaxes with 24 grains of H335.

My Tikka loves 27.5 gr. H 355 Firing a 40gr. Sierra Hp. In a 1-12 barrel.

Have fun finding a good load. Emilio .. Pico Rivera, Ca.

Varget is SLOW for weights less than 69g in a 223. Benchmark is MEDIUM in velocity with higher velocities than Varget with 50 & 55g bullets. Accurate Arms 2015 yields the same speed with velocity as the Benchmark with 50 and 55g bullets.

Vit 133 yields TOP velocity with extreme accuracy producing almost 22/250 velocities and is worth the extra money that you pay for it, if you are wanting extreme accuracy with speed.

Most of the shooting on dog towns, squirrel fields that I have done with my various 223's have been with 748 resulting in excellent accuracy and velocity equal with Benchmark and the current production of AA2015. The old lot of AA2015 was on par with Vit-133.

The old stand by H-322 is equal in velocity and accuracy as the Benchmark in my rifles with the 50's and 55's, both are excellent powders.

If you are wanting the absolute most out of your 223, then vit-133 with the 50's at 3600 and Vit-135 with the 55's at 3500 will amaze you at the accuracy at these speeds. Combine the speed, accuracy, and the fact that I never full length size I unscrewed the 22/250 barrel off my 700 and screwed on a 243.

I've always used Win 748 with Nosler bullets and Remington 7 1/2 primers.

H335 and Varget are excellent powders too... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
