.224" Deer Bullet...?

I know a 223 isn't the ideal deer round, but a guy I work with wants to take is boy this season for his first deer hunt. He was asking me which bullets I thought would be best. I told him I wasn't for sure but I knew a good place to ask. Looking around on Midway these are the candidates I came up with. Any opinions, any good ones I left out? I'm leaning towards the Barnes TSX or Nosler Partitions. Those who suggest the Speer, are they worth that much of a premium in price?

Nosler Partition Bullets 22 Caliber (224 Diameter) 60 Grain Spitzer Box of 50
Product #: 665774
Status: Available
Our price: $21.49

i like them for deer but as always know you animal and know shot placement well a neck shot will usually drop em DRT but a quartering AWAY shot it best with this bullet aim for the heart and they are done

I have shot a lot of deer and antelope with the Nosler Partition bullet out of a 22-250. Its my favorite. I have used Speer's 70 gr. spitzer a lot and had good luck with it also. Use a good bullet, and take good shots and you will do fine.

North West Custom Projectile has a couple new bullets that are designed for deer sized game in .224". There is currently a 55,65 and 75gr. Spitzer with a C-110 heavy wall jacket. Soon they will have a rebated boat-tail design in the same weights.

I've used the 60 grain Partition and the 55 grain Trophy Bonded on deer with equally effective results. The TSX gets rave reviews as a deer-killer also and someday I'll give them a whirl.

I have some 60 gr NPT that were over pressure for some reason in my .223. They do shoot great out of my 22-250. I would have to suggest the 53 grain Barnes TSX for the 223 for a good bullet that will not be twist finicky.

Here is the best price on Noslers but you may have to buy a bunch to make the shipping affordable.

I love the partition bullets and would start with them first. My brother in law shot two big muledeer with the rem factory ammo with no problems but i like the idea of a better bullet.

In light bullets, the partition is hard to beat. If the rifle will handle the 60 partition, aim for the lungs and it will get the job done. I would not reccommend a neck shot from a new kid. His nerves will be rattled. Give him a bigger target.

I have seen quite a few deer go down with the 60 partitions.

All the bullets you mention above are great deer bullets...

Put your shot where it needs to be and you'll have a dead deer shortly...

As previously mentioned, some of those bullets will need a much faster twist to stabilize...

If you are really interested in the Partitions, there is a aucton site that Shooters Pro Shop is now using: www.bivwak.com

For example, right now you can bid on the .22 60gr 2nds at $9/50 (Buy It Now is $13.70 thought ). They have 110 packs, so you have a good chance of snagging some at that price + shipping.

http://www.bivwak.com/auction_details.php?name=Nosler-2260-Partition-2nds&auction_id=102748

I have dealt with them once and it was worth my while - I got 5 100 bullet packs of .204 40gr 2nds for $10/each.

The hevier the better, I would go with the TSX myself. But I would not use a .224 dia bullet if anything larger was avalible 243 in a 90 gfrn or better yet 25-06 or 30-30 are all much better choices and all have very slight recoil if that is why the 224 was being considered.

My son and I have killed in the neighborhood of 20 deer over the past three seasons with .223 WSSMs shooting either 60 gr. partition Noslers or 65 gr. Sierra Gamekings. No lost game. Exit holes are rare on broadside shots, ocassionally the Noslers will exit.

The prices qouted in the first post where is that at. And which ones work better with a 1-12- twist

The prices above are from www.midwayusa.com I just osted from there because they have a wide selection in one place. Where I buy will depend on best deal and what else I'm ordering.

Partitions are at the to of my list followed by the TSX's. I'm looking at a 1:9 twist so the ones listed should be fine. AR magazine length will have more bearing on the final round. The .223 will be used because the kid is 9 years old, is familiar with firing the AR and the other guns he has are too big. They'll be hunting in KY, we are Hoosiers and last year was first time any "rifles" were allowed to be used on deer here, and those are fairly specific pistol-like rounds. Most hunters here have shotguns and muzzleloaders along with a few varmit rifles but not the usual suspects you'd see in most other deer hunters' safes. Thanks for all the input. Once we get working on loads and such I'll give some range reports. Hopefully in the fall I'll post a pic of a grinning kid and proud father.

There is an article on the net entitled "When Bullets hit Bone" (if I remember right. It had fairly extensive testing of the .224 caliber 60gr. Nosler Partition. After reading the article I decided to pick up a few boxes and work up a load for Deer Season to use in my DPMS Panther Bull 20 Fluted last season.

After shooting 150 bullets with 3 or 4 different powders I gave up on trying to find a load that would shoot consistant sub 2" groups at 100 yards. I even phoned Nosler a couple of times to get some recommendations, and was told that due to the small diameter of the .224" Partition and the fact that the rear portion of the .224" Partition is so hard, some rifles just will not shoot them well.

On a different note when my daughters were first starting hunting the only rifle I had other than a .30-06 was a Ruger KM77RFP MKII in .223 Remington. I loaded up 64gr. Winchester Power Points to 2912 FPS muzzle velocity. Accuracy was about 1" for 5 shots at 100 yards from the bench using W-748 Powder. We killed a few Whitetails with that bullet with good results.

Good luck

Larry

A few weeks ago I worked up a load for my Cz 223 1/12 twist
using 64 gr.power points,IMR powder(what I had on hand)
I ended up with a load shooting 5 into 1 in.@ 100 from the bench.Cant say how they preform other than on paper but have heard good things about the bullet.Kind of the old reliable type comments.
