.22LR bore cleaning

How do most of you guys clean the bores on your .22's? I am very careful, of course, with my centerfires, but have been using a boresnake without the brass brush in it for the rimfires.

Would the brass brush in the boresnake hurt the bore?

Just trying to get an idea of what everyone does!

You will probably find most people don't clean their 22lrs very much. Maybe just a patch down the bore to clean the powder residue.
 
I am very careful w/my .22 target rifle bores. I use a piece of string trimmer monofilament line about 1/16" diameter to make a pull through. Cut one end to a sharp point w/sidecutters and heat the other end to melting point w/a match, push hot end against a flat surface to form a "bradded" end. You can then push sharp end through a patch and push the line throug bore from muzzle end. Apply bore cleaner to patch and pull through the barrel. If carefully pulled straigh through, nothing but the patch ever contacts the bore.

I keep one of these pull-throughs and a few patches in the butt of my AR and always have on in my gear @ hunting camp. They work well on large bores when rod not available, too.

For regular production barrels, just be gentle. Clean the minimum to remove any lead fouling.

For Olympic winning barrels, never ever clean them. A good friend of mine has several Olympic winning rifles that have not been cleaned for a million rounds. He occasionally loans them to friends for certain matches and absolutely insists that they do not clean them in any way.

I have a 10-22 with Clark heavy barrel and Hogue OM stock. The only time I clean the bore is when it begins to spread the normally tight groups. Otherwise, I'll clean it a couple times a year. The rifle has about 15,000 rounds through the barrel and still shoots incredibly small groups at 50yds.

For cleaning I use a .177cal cleaning kit rod and jags to push patches. For those thorough cleanings I'll soak the patches in Marvel's Mystery Oil to loosen up any lead 'ribbons' stuck in the grooves as well as powder residue. After sitting for an afternoon or night I'll patch the bore adequately then use a foaming bore cleaner to remove the oil. I do this sequence with all my rifles. So far, so good.
 
I like your cleaning setup with the trimmer string. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif Never heard of it before. I wil have to make one.
