22LR Scope Question

I am looking at getting my son and I new scopes for our 22lr's for squirrel hunting. They will be Leupold VX Freedom's. However, which one would you recommend?

2-7x33
3-9x40
3-9x33 EFR

How important is the EFR (adjustable objective) for say 50 yards and under predominantly?

I am not as concerned about the price differences as I am about actual results. I will spend the money for the EFR if it is useful or may someday be needed. However, I do not want to spend the money if I will never need nor use this feature.

Please help,
Steve

If these are all 22LR scopes then they are parallax set to a distance more compatible to a 22. If they are standard rifle scope the adjustable objective might be to your advantage for closer in work, in theory.

I've used standard low power scopes successfully for squirrel hunting. I haven't seen allot of need for an adjustable parallax scope until I get into higher powers.

I really like the Weaver 2-7 rimfire scope. I had a Weaver K-3 with fine crosshairs and a dot in my goto squirrel rifle.

So where would the adjustable objective benefit me, whether that be now or in the future? I want to buy once, so the EFR is what I will buy if it has any more benefits. I especially like the fine duplex reticle bs the MOA reticle.

Thanks.

I would select one of the vx-freedom rimfire ... with the rimfire moa reticle. This will help you deal with drop for the longer shots when hunting and at the range if you want to stretch it out for fun.

2-7 or 3-9 are both fine. Depends more on the distance you shoot.

the AO is really more important for target shooting and at higher magnifications. Personally, I prefer no AO on scopes up to 10x. Beyond that I prefer AO. I also really only care for AO and the higher magnification on a gun shot mostly from a bench. To carry around I like em slim and trim with lower power.

Two other scopes to consider are the weaver classic rv-7 and the sightron 3-9 rimfire. The sightron has a xhair that is sort of medium thickness. I strongly prefer thinner reticles for small targets. That rimfire moa reticle is a little thinner than a standard duplex, and I wish they would put it in a 4-16x40 AO.

I have a VX-1 Rimfire in 2-7 on my 22LR and it’s great, works very well for squirrel hunting.
