Im having a heck of a time getting my gun to shoot these with varget. nosler manual says varget gives the best results with these i must be doing somethign way off. i was using an OAL of 2.710 which is the max. is that maybe too long for this round??

Just cuz the book says it gave the best results in THERE rifle dont mean squat in yours, as you've currently found.

Your not doing anything wrong, your rifle simply dont like varget. Try another powder or two and I bet your problem will be solved.

I tried a bit of IMR4350 with 70g nbt's and they shoot decent, .75-1" from my stevens. I have them seated out to 2.710" as well.

I didn't have any luck with those bullet's and 4350. Couple years later I tried 70gr SMK's and H414 w/mag primer's and boy do they shoot. Now I can't find the Nosler 70gr bullet's anywhere, no ever at the Pro Shop in Bend!

okay good to know other peoples guns are finickey too. there isnt a whole lot of bullet in the case with the 70's at that oal so i was assuming that might be the issue. ill make up some test shots with some imr 4064, thats the only thing else i have here, and see what happens.

First group I ever shot with the 70's and Varget was a cloverleaf @ 100 yards. 40.5, with a Rem 9 1/2 primer and a short OAL (I want to say 2.625 maybe). I found another sweet spot then up around 41.7 grains, but to improve consistency I ended up having to slide out to about 2.690.

Going strictly from memory now, and with the cob webs of the holidays where I haven't done any loading in too long - if you think about this, 2.690 makes some sense for the 70 BT's. I recall those being about .904 in length. Rule of thumb says to tuck the diameter of your bullet inside the case neck. So .904-.243=.661 sticking out + trim length of the brass (2.035)=2.696, right? Anyway, every gun is different. If I was just punching paper, I'd be shooting 40.5 but I plan to still try some other powders myself. I want to see loads that come together toward the upper end of the velocity curve, without putting myself in any danger zone of course too. I think my next move on the 70's will be with 4064. Good luck and let us know what you find that works for yours.

I could not get them to shoot well in two of my 243's with varget.

Between 46.0-47.0g of H or IMR 4350 with a Win Primer shoots very tiny groups Velocity is 3600 fps. This load is straight out of the Nosler Reloading manual for the most accurate load with IMR 4350.

Good luck!
