243 cleaning rod suggestion

Guys. I looked for a more appropriate forum. Didn't find one, so mods, if this doesn't belong here, I apologize.

Been using a 22 cal Dewey rod on my 243 and Possum Hollow bore guide. That rod whips and bends all over the place. Is there a better choice?

I use the same Dewey on my 243. I still have to guide mine a bit (on all my rifles) but not to the point it bends out of control. Maybe you are trying to push too tight of a patch through the bore? I do have times where I start and can tell it is going to be too tight so I pull it back and either apply a new patch or fold the patch down right.

Does it bend the Dewey if you just run a bore brush through it?

I use a 22 cal Dewey up to 7mm. Proper fit on the patches is paramount. Some manufactures actually have fit guides on their websites and packaging. I think your patches are far too tight.

I use the "Pro Shot" stainless steel rods...I have one for my .20, .22, and .308 calibers...They have a smaller ball bearing handle so they easily fit a high combed stock without bending...I've never liked the fiberglas rods after seeing one that splintered and wound up sticking out of the user's hand after it broke...

Yep. Either a bronze or a nylon brush it bends.

Hmmm...maybe you have too long of a rod or the wrong caliber (maybe it is really a 17 rod)? I have several and have never had any issues. I do use a bore guide in the receiver though. I have one that is really long, and it will flex if it gets jammed up.

I have been using Dewey rods since they first came out. If your rod is bending all over the place, then you need to slow down and take your time, you are in too big of a hurry and using too much force.

I would highly recommend a Neil Jones rod guide that has a bushing that fits on the rod and is inserted into the back of the rod guide. This bushing centers the rod in the center of the bore, thus eliminating throat wear from a cleaning rod. I have wiped the lands out in the 5 to 7 0 clock area with coated and highly polished stainless rods. Neil Jones rod guide is a fantastic investment for your rifle. If your rod guide does not have a bushing that slips in the rear to center the rod, then you are putting wear on the throat...make no mistake about that fact.

Ackleyman, thanks for the heads up.

I am using a Possum Hollow bore guide and "solvent port" which extend quite a ways out the back of the receiver when using the cleaning rod. Any bendage seems to be restricted to the free length of the cleaning rod, and it is a rather long cleaning rod.

I can see the throat in this rifle, the leade area, and it doesn't seem that any of the previous owners shot it very much. I am reluctant to shoot it much either.

I shall attempt to feed the rod in more slowly and see if this doesn't help some.
