When necking down to .243 from .308, do I need to bump the shoulder back a few thousandths and fire form the brass to the .243, or just resize to a cam over on the press, light cam over. I've reloaded for years but have never done this.

Thanks,

Tony

Go grab some .243 brass. Its not expensive nor is it rare...unless you are just doing it for the challenge.

I was resizing some .243 brass and had a few pieces of .308 I found and decided to try it for the heck of it. Just a question I wanted to ask.

i use 307 win to make 303 savage brass. it takes a few steps and lots of lube. havent gotten a case stuck yet. what im saying is go slow and use enough lube.

Tony, I used 308 cases in 243 many years ago just to see if it worked. I don't remember if they were full length resized or partialy just so they chambered easily in the 243. I did not use hot loads and they shot ok. I do remember that the necks cracked after a few tries as I did nothing to prevent it, anneal or ream the necks. spike

Put me in the camp of to much hassle. I also like to have the proper headstamp on the cartridge whenever it's not to much trouble.

Hi,
I resize 308 to 270-08. It's only about .5mm, but even then I made sure I measured the neck thickness to ensure it didn't jam the loaded round in the neck of the chamber. If you did decide to do it, I'd measure teh neck dameter of a store bought loaded round and you'd have to neck turn to ensure your total ODiametre was no greater. I'd then anneal. Just be safe.
